Not that I guess it makes any difference, but my Auzentech X-Mystique 7.1 audio card with the latest 32-bit drivers for WinXP works just fine in Generic Hardware mode. All sound effects, music, and voices accounted for.

Ok, so I installed the new drivers and reinstalled OpenAL..the missing sounds now work with the hardware specific setting, but they sound off...kind of hollow or something.  That's basically what I remember happening with Quake 4 too, it just didn't sound right.

When I set my OpenAL Sound Device to "SB X-Fi Audio [AC00]" I get "WARNING: Setting OpenAL sound device to something other than "Generic Software" may make music stop working."

Sure as shinola, I don't get music. I also don't get hull impacts from weapons, countermessure launch, missile launch, ship explosions, thrust sounds (regular or fly-by) and who knows how many others.

Using OpenAL 1.9.9 and SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_09_0007.exe drivers package from website.

Have not yet tested whether or not "Generic Hardware" results in the same.

AFAIK the recommended setting for Audio is indeed Generic Software at the moment.

Dunno if the sound system will be renovated (5.1 anyone?) anytime soon and what effects that will have on settings, but right now you're likely better off using Generic Software as far as I know.

I would like some developer to confirm this, however, as I'm not certain about it. After all, whatever works is fine I guess...

Okay, it's now determined to make a liar out of me. After having now run it originally on X-Fi, then Software, then Hardware, X-Fi is now (so far) working flawlessly.

Did you change any other settings at all before your X-Fi setting worked?

Nope. I didn't even fiddle with any of the X-Fi controls software, or reboot my system.
