Hi all,
I just noticed a small problem while I was playing warzone. Around some of the lights on ships I see a small black box, and around flak bullets or w/e i see the same black boxes. I have all the alpha patches and what not and am using the 3.8.9 released a little after new years. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have the 710 patches for the mediavps?

I had the same problem.  Turey's right, the 710 patches will fix it.  Those are in the release thread for the newest Media VPs.

I already have 710_adveffects, 710_effects, and 710_models. Any other ideas?

Bwah?  Can you confirm they're in the right place?

I had this problem as well and was able to fix it by re-downloading all the mediavps, deleting the old ones, and putting the new ones in their place.  =/

Yeah, they're in C:\Games\Freespace2\mediavps, along with all my standard vps. Anyway, I guess I'll try redownloading and see if that fixes it.

Sorry bout that, so I'll just tell you whats in that folder. Theres only one folder, which is named Data, then the Fs2 logo image file, a mod.ini, the 3 710 patches that I named in the other post, mv_02patch_Shield_HUD, mv_03pathNameplate, mv_core, mv_effects, mv_music, mv_models, mv_textures. I removed mv_adveffects because of the slowdown with the shockwaves. Hope that clearer.

Are you sure you just have that? Cos it should work fine.

Run a debug build, exit, and open fs2_open.log from Freespace2\data (if in windows, do not use notepad but wordpad, you'll see why  ;)). Just after the first few lines you'll have the order in which FS2 looks in folders or vps. Check it is loading the vp patches BEFORE the rest of media vps.
IF YOU HAVE TROUBLES WITH FS2:
  • Please, please, please, READ and UNDERSTAND the sticky threads in FreeSpace & FreeSpace Open Support board.
A lot of people are willing to help you, but, as anyone can understand, seeing the very same "issues" repeated again and again can become quite depressing. Please, spend a bit of time trying to solve the issue by yourself.
    (Lobo deserves a monument).
  • Then, if you aren't still able to solve your issue, feel free to ask for help in that same board.
FYI, most of the troubles are caused by wrong mod installations which lead to either missing data or undesired cross-effects between them. Always follow the mod installation instructions and keep a clean FS2 installation as explained in the sticky threads. Two additional links about how the game handles game data:
  • If you think that you've discovered a bug, mantis it.
Provide as much info as you can, and try to narrow it down. A lonely "FS2 doesn't work" is not a good report.

What are mv_02patch_Shield_HUD, mv_03pathNameplate files?

What are mv_02patch_Shield_HUD, mv_03pathNameplate files?

They are personal fixes I email him quite time ago. 02 just sets the bakha shield ani in HUD instead of interface, and 03 has the fixed version Taylor made for the Nameplate texture. I can assure you they don't cause black boxes at all. :D

(Till now I have 9 minor and extra fixes to 3.6.8. vps).

Found 23 roots and 12412 files.

So that means it is loading the patches before the rest of the vps right? Any more ideas?

That VP is loaded first, so what's in there?

And of course, this assumes that there are no files just laying around outside of a VP in 'C:\games\freespace2\Warzone\' or 'C:\games\freespace2\mediavps\'.

it isn't something obivous like emptying his cache folder or something is it?

Well as soon as you guys figure out what his problem is the sooner I can get it fixed as well, I'll do the debugger thing and see what comes up for me. Oh I also get the "black box" effect around some explosions as well.

All I have apart from the vp in the warzone folder are the fs2 logo, a mod.ini, and a settings file, and the same goes for my mediavps folder. OOO...Could it be the fact that i have the 710_adveffects patch, but not the actual mv_adveffects.vp file? I just noticed that, maybe deleting the 710 patch will fix it.

You mean, you didn't extract the 710-patch-VP from the RAR archive?

Alright, so as far as I can tell, deleting the mp_710_adveffects.vp file solved the problem. Im not 100% sure though, but it seems fixed. Thanks for the help all :D.
