I'm making a mission for my campaign where you must take off from an Orion, along with Beta and Gamma wings. The thing is, the AI always veers to the upper left and crashes into the Orion. Why is this and is there a way to fix this? They do it on all AI experience levels. BTW, I have retail FRED and FS1.

Try starting them off with a waypoints-once order to get them clear of the orion.

<Cobra|> You play this mission too intelligently.

OK, thanks. It would have been nice if Volition could have done a better job on the AI. They didn't really even have a reason to do anything other than go straight.

Are you placing the fighters in the bay at the start of the mission, or are you choosing bay arrival in the arrival/departure cues editor?
The Trivial Psychic Strikes Again!

Having tried to do this for WC Saga (where pretty much all missions start in the hangar) I can imagine what you are seeing. It seems the solution is to put the fighters far enough away from eachother (about 25-50 units to the side). Otherwise they seem to think they will collide with eachother and evade into the hangar wall. The AI is somewhat stupid here since most of the time there's by far enough room.

Okay, it would probably make it easier to stagger them anyways. BTW, to answer Trivial Psychic's question, the fighters are just outside the launch bay, a little bit above the landing/takeoff strip.

Change the wing's arrival cue to Docking Bay instead of hyperspace. The ships will then launch along the path the Orion has instead of simply smacking into the sidewall.

That's basically what TP was hinting at.

/bump

Tried this today with Alpha and my nice shiny Orion... my fighter just seems to bang around inside the hanger, trying to fly through the hull... not sure what the rest of the wing does 'cos I can't see them :)

Was using the aforementioned waypoints-above-the-landing-strip method up to now, but would be nice if I could use the actual Orion launch sequence. Anybody had success using TP's method, or can suggest what I'm doing wrong? I've got the wing set to launch from the Orion bay, and and event firing immediately that enables AI... AND a don't-colide-invisible on the Orion

Make a test mission in FRED (NOT FRED2_Open) and see if that works. It's possible that the paths on the HTL Orion are different.
