The HUD elements are greyscale images and thus making them look "dirty" would be rather hard. Monocolour has it's limitations after all. Of course it is possible to some extent, but what I myself would desperately want to see is render-to-texture virtual cockpits with gauges and avionics panels made in the spirit of original trilogy glimpses of the cockpits. With dynamic field of view and helmet HUD for the critical information. The existing X-Wing games also offer some insight into what the ships' insides might look like, but I'd like to see the necessary information mixed into something that looks a bit more like what we see in the movies - that was one aspect of X-Wing games I never really liked much; even though it was a good interface design it didn't match the movies very well. X-Wing tried, but after that they made it look a bit silly with the 3D view on the central panel. I would personally propose showing a green wireframe on that central panel, that would be closer to the movies than a full colour view and more useful than the rather rigid aiming indicator used in X-Wing.
