OT- On forums and other things...
I was wondering what it costs to run a community like HLP- forums, pages, mods (were they updated on the main page), everything. I've got a community, may well need a modding center soon, and I wanted one as generally well-put-together as this one (not sucking up here, I don't think I've ever seen better). So, what does it take, not only in money, but in computer power, hours of work a month, everything?

Well, if you have a host, it's basically free..... timewise, it'll take over your life.
WE ARE HARD LIGHT PRODUCTIONS. YOU WILL LOWER YOUR FIREWALLS AND SURRENDER YOUR KEYBOARDS. WE WILL ADD YOUR INTELLECTUAL AND VERNACULAR DISTINCTIVENESS TO OUR OWN. YOUR FORUMS WILL ADAPT TO SERVICE US. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

I have enough work managing my own crappy website and its only got like 14 users. Lucky they don't pay for their hosting or their email access.   If they did, I'd be obligated to get that thing back up immediately if it goes down on a friday night (as it is, it stays down until monday morning).

Cool. Managing all my modding crap already has taken over my life.

I spend all my time making FS2 missions, although I'm also starting to get a little into 3D modeling and rendering these days.

Or you could have your own server if you have a .nix machience and a static ip. If you haven't got a static ip then use www.dyndns.org   and if you haven't got a .nix machiene got one   they're very good with cgi (one way a server can give dynamic content, chop and change stuff etc. ) otherwise head on over to www.apache.org  and download the Windows version and make the most of it.

Don't want to use your own server? www.spaceports.com  is the best free host on the net with everything you could possibly want from a host; ftp, php, cgi (perl and python), MySQL, loads of space and bandwidth and minimal ads. It makes paying for hosting seem stupid
