OT - computer problems
Its probably just nothing, but im having a small computer problem and i was wondering if anyone had any ideas. On startup, my bios gives me this error:

SMART Detection reports fatal error
WARNING: Backup all data now and replace PRIMARY MASTER disk drive. Drive malfunction predicted. System has been halted

Then windows xp dosn't start up
If i go into safe mode w/ command prompt i get this error:

Windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Windows reported the following error:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DISK

any ideas? or am I screwed?

  • What is this? I don't even...
Make that drive a slave to another, get any data you need off of it, then get it RMA'd...

If the drive has already crashed you're buggered and need to get a new/spare one in there.

If you have data on it that needs recovering contact Ontrack (in the UK, im not sure if they operate in the US), costs about £200 to get everything off the drive.

BTW while on the subject of hard drives

Anyone know where i can find 80-68pin SCSI adaptors?

I didn't want to have it come to that considering it was working perfectly yesterday when I shut it down. I power it up this morning and I get this sh*t. What causes it to suddenly do that? No new software, no new hardware installed.

edit: Its only 3 months old, worked perfectly till now

sometimes BIOS and the system settings mess up especially when there's a slight surge or something... this may have no affect with your lights, and the computer might not even go blank, but some of the settings get screwed... (BIOS)... twice it's happened to me, and I had to reset the BIOS, cause it disabled my COM ports and all that...
i'd say before you do anything, take your computer to get backed up, or do it yourself (burn CDs or whatever)  or if you have one of those large IOMEGA or whatever drives, then back up your disk 100%, (i.e. copy the system files, and everything, as set up... so you've got a 'ghost' of your computer, to be sure you don't miss anything, and it may come in handy later)  then take your computer in to get repaired... it could just be some BIOS conflict...
