Confused over the different items to download to use
Hello.

First off, major kudos to the community.  I didn't know that Freespace 2 still lives on with all the mods and now the SCP.

Well I read over the wiki article and tried to understand the post for the vp and scp files and left confused.

I have a retail version of Freespace 2 GOTY edition.

I want to still play the retail version but also now have access to the new mods that are out there.

So the first question is what should I be downloading.  I would prefer to download all the content to my system and then install from there versus a web download in case the site and the community ever goes away I will still have what is needed to install whenever I upgrade my computer.

I notice one link to download the 3.6.8 Zeta Vp files.  I noticed another link to I think the Freespace 2 Source Code Project where it has some 20 plus VP type files to download.  Another message thread from someone asking about 2 ships that were missing.

Another link says to download someones installer.

Finally another thread had links to download OGG versions of the intro and other videos for Freespace 2.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Please note I never played around with Fred or the file types so assume I am not familiar with the terms.

Checkout jr2's signature <- link provided. There you will find a link to Turey's on-line installer, which is probably the best way to get everything up to date, however, also in his signature is a link to hip63's DVD images, This is the whole Freespace2 and SCP with media bundles and a couple of completed campaigns/mods. This is what I think you are looking for, you can burn this image to a dvd and install from that if and when you wish (even make copies to hand out to your friends/family etc.)

And.......

:welcome:

*Edit* If you do decide to go the way of the DVD don't forget the patch which can be found here or here

Re: Confused over the different items to download to use
If I take your meaning right, you are not looking for an executable install, but rather which components you need to run SCP, right?

In that case, have a look at this wiki page.

I would also point you to Karajorma's FAQ site here:  http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html

Between the wiki and Karajorma's site, you should be able to solve any problems you encounter.

Good luck!

Re: Confused over the different items to download to use
I read over the links provided and came up with several questions.

One of the mods and some of the forum messages referred to a CVS file/build.  Is that already included in one of the downloads or is this a seperate file I need to download and where from?

I noticed it said in some mods/missions/campaigns about checking or unchecking the mediavp option and how certain mods will make it a secondary choice.  How do I know when to use this or not to use?

The inferno mod referred to a "Standard" SCP.  What is there any difference between downloading the 3.6.9 w/vp, ogg etc?

Another readme said to install the MVE from the 2nd and 3rd CD of FS2 and disk 1 and 2 of FS1 (do I also install it from the Silent Threat Cd) is that correct?  Are there any other files I need to take off the cd and put in the directory ono the hard drive.

Finally according to one of the messages it said not to install the High Artwork or you would be stuck in 640x480.  Is that true and should I then reinstall it.

Thanks again.

Can't wait for tonight when I put this all together and try it out.

CVS is the system that the SCP Programmers use to enable us to work together on the same project without continually wiping out each other's changes. If a post says to use a CVS take a good look at the date of the build. Any official release from after this date will also work. For instance Transcend mentioned using a CVS build from 2005 in its release thread if I remember correctly. However since 3.6.9 Official was released later than this you can simply use it instead.

Currently there is no reason why a newbie would need a CVS build that I can think of. Stick to 3.6.9. It should do everything you want it to.

Check it for anything that uses FS2 ships. In fact now that all the total conversions are going stand alone you probably don't need to ever turn off the media VPs as far as I know. Who told you you had to?

Shouldn't be.

If you can get at them and don't already have them in your folder copy across any of these files.

    *  root_fs2.vp
    * sparky_fs2.vp
    * sparky_hi_fs2.vp
    * stu_fs2.vp
    * tango1_fs2.vp
    * tango2_fs2.vp
    * tango3_fs2.vp
    * smarty_fs2.vp
    * warble_fs2.vp

as well as anything that has .mve as the extension. Any .mve files from the FS1 CDs should go in your FS1 Port folder rather than your main FS2 folder. You don't need to do this but it will improve the performance of the game/the amount of time it takes to download.

That's the wrong way round. If you don't install the high res artwork you'll be stuck in 640x480. So don't do anything. :)

Unless it came from your FS2 disks, then it needs to go in a folder under /Freespace2/data/movies. If that folder doesn't exist, then create it.

Re: Confused over the different items to download to use
Corrected.

And it doesn't actually need to go in Data\Movies. Going directly into \Freespace2 is fine too.

In fact I keep mine in Freespace2\mediavps\ as that instantly tells me if I've made a mistake and forgotten to add a mod.ini
