It's sort of an easter egg by Volition. If you look closely you can see the faces of the developers.

Volition Bravos is something created, faces of the creators are on the pirates.  You can call it into any mission by typing arrrrwalktheplank

No, you'll just find flying difficult and get a few errors.

Ghostavo is correct.  It's Volition's little Easter Egg, though it'll take a Sathanas juggernaut quite a bit of time to crack its shell 

I think the Volition team wanted to make old-school pirates the #1 power of the Freespace Universe, but alas their bosses thought otherwise

Lots of the development team like/liked pirates.  In the old FreeSpace 2 multiplayer beta there were plenty of pirate references if you started reading the tech room information that had been written at that point (obviously it was placeholder).  So this translated ultimately into the Volition Bravos which is the pirate ship you're talking about with some/most/all of the development teams faces plastered all over the "people" (more like blobs) on the ship.

You need four r's in it.

Yeah, codes don't work unless you input the EXACT keys.  One wrong letter and you have to restart typing from the beginning

damn straight. it took  anSJ, and myself with in an erinyies with weapons forced to BFRed, with x64 time compression about 30 min or so to kill it (i didn't actually time it, i'm guessing).
