IIRC FRED1 came with a doc file explaining how to do things. You could try downloading the FRED2 Documentation and reading the walkthrough in there. Although FRED is different from FRED2 they are similar enough that most of what you learned from that would be applicable.

To be honest I wouldn't touch FRED with a 100' barge pole. I get annoyed by the limitations of using FRED2 instead of FRED2_Open as it is.
Karajorma's Freespace FAQ. It's almost like asking me yourself.

Ctrl-Click adds ships.

you can use FRED2 with a mod containing FS1 ships.

in FRED2, as Goober said, Ctrl-Click adds ships. to select the ship class, browse the list on the right side of the menu bar.

there should be (somewhere) a FRED walktrough... read it, it's helpful. if you don't have it and you can't find it here (most unlikely) use PM to ask.

Believe it or not, Element, this is the thing you will try to find the longest (how to add ships, I mean). The other FRED features are much more straightforward and transparent.
