Well that's just plain silly. In reality, the craft uses mass effect fields to accelerate minuscule amounts of metal from a modest stash hidden within the hull. As you know, even a paint chip can give off the energy an atomic bomb at super-high speeds, so it's only a matter of speeding up incredibly tiny flecks of steel and you've got yourself virtually unlimited ammunition.
