Another asteroid problem
Lately I've seen this

in at least two places: both when finishing up the Homesick campaign, and also when playing the original Freespace 2 missions.

I have the -jpgtga flag enabled in Launcher, else I would see no textures at all on the asteroids.  Instead, there are holes in them - parts of the asteroids simply don't get textures, so there are these weird, jagged-edged holes in them.

What's the fix?  I have no idea what caused this.

Re: Another asteroid problem
System specs?

Which build ar you using?

Command line?

If you try debug builds do you get any warnings or errors?

Re: Another asteroid problem
AMD Athlon XP 3200+, 1 GB RAM, Win XP Pro (w/SP2), ATI Radeon 9700 Pro.  That's all that should matter.

I have the very latest version of SCP and mediavps, thanks to Turey's installer, which I ran just a few weeks ago.  Using the 3.6.9 .exe (the 3.6.10 build killed framerates for me).   I haven't had this problem until the last week or so.  Don't know what happened.

The Debug version of the 3.6.9 executable produced nothing.  I guess it doesn't think there's anything wrong, but I'm still seeing this (attached):

Re: Another asteroid problem
It could be driver related, but mostly likely it's due to corrupt IBX files.  Delete all of your IBX files and that could/should fix it.

Re: Another asteroid problem
D:\FS_SCP\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe -mod mediavps -spec -glow -env -jpgtga -mipmap -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -missile_lighting -cache_bitmaps -targetinfo -rearm_timer -ballistic_gauge -ship_choice_3d -3dwarp -warp_flash -snd_preload  -fov .39

(It happened with the default fov also.)

No, not fixed.  I hope it's not the new Catalyst drivers.  I was running version 6.4 for a long time, but recently upgraded to the 7.12 driver.

Re: Another asteroid problem
I recently re-ran the turey installer and while all the files were present, they were not complete.

Fortunately, I had another set of files elsewhere. If you have MD5 checking software (HashTab is a good app) post the hashes on everything in Mediavp's folder along with file size.

Re: Another asteroid problem
Well, there goes my idea, those all match what I have.

And the only difference in our command lines is that I don't have -jpgtga on but I do have -normal, but I'm running 3.6.10.

Just tried with 3.6.9 (with and without -jpgtga) and I don't have that problem. I'll try later on my inhell box which has a 9600XT on it. I typically only run the 4.12 Catalyst drivers on it, but I'll see if the newer ones "break" it.

Re: Another asteroid problem
Yeah, that was the only idea I had, maybe the new Catalyst drivers are causing it.  It's a pain in the butt, but I guess I'll try rolling back to the older ones I was using.  I have to uninstall the new ones, reboot, install the older drivers (which fortunately I have tucked away on my hard drive) and reboot again.

UPDATE: Turns out it was easier than that - I just used the "Rollback" feature in Device Manager.  Now I'm using the 6.4 Catalyst drivers again, and guess what?  The asteroid texture problem disappeared!

Some "upgrade" that turned out to be!  So much for religiously updating one's drivers.

There was another problem the new Catalyst drivers caused, which I didn't think to mention before as it was relatively minor: any time I opened a dialog, such as when I clicked Exit on the main menu or pressed [ESC] in-mission, everything except the dialog took on a weird blue tint.  Doesn't happen now that I'm using the older Catalyst drivers again.

Re: Another asteroid problem
ATI was one reason why I always undertook updating my drivers with care and finally defaulted to the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" philosophy.

Re: Another asteroid problem
I also will stick with the "not broke, don't fix" model from now on.  I have done it with all my other hardware.  Of course, some software will complain at you for not having the latest drivers - Steam, for example.  Eh, so what.

Re: Another asteroid problem
I haven't bothered with the 2 latest Catalyst releases, as they're mainly bugfixes for issues I didn't have with games I didn't own, but some of the changes between 6.4 and 7.10 were quite worthwhile.  Might I recommend the Omega version of the 7.10?  They work perfectly with Freespace, and haven't given me problems in anything else either.  Switching to that actually fixed a minor graphical problem I was having with the 10/28 XT build (mouse related in the mainhall mostly).

Re: Another asteroid problem
my only problem is that even though the 7.12's make fs2 buggy (noticed it with BTRL's roid) they make Hellgate run 100% smoother.

sometimes i wish i didnt have to pick :-(

Nope, no joy there either.  WIth the Omegas the warp-in flashes of larger ships are screwed up.  They look ...well, it's hard to describe.  I'll try to get a screenshot.

Re: Another asteroid problem
Finally a fellow ati owner with the same problem. I think I will uninstall catalyst 7.12 and try omega drivers. The latest ati drivers seem to have problems. Hopefully this will also fix the inverted colors as well.

Edit: It was the drivers. I removed Catalyst 7.12 and installed the drivers that originally came with the card. I say the game works better now than ever.

Odd, I hadn't noticed any graphical oddities, though I am running non-mediavp subspace effects.  I didn't think those messed around with the flash though.
