Other planets have hydrocarbons
http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/news/press-release-details.cfm?newsID=814

Turns out that Titan has massive amounts of hydrocarbons.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Oh god damn it. I really don't want to go to war with Titan.

I'm sure I've read about theories regarding 'Methane Seas' etc on Titan before....

I think this is more about their quantity and variety than their existence.
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

Re: Other planets have hydrocarbons
I would hope so, because we've known about hydrocarbons on Titan for decades.  Not to mention the fact that methane and ammonia are two of the greatest constituents of all the gas giants in our system.  On Neptune, the atmospheric methane content was estimated at around 1.5%.  You want to talk about a virtually unlimited "fossil" fuel supply?  Cloud City, here we come!

I'm not really sure how this is news, we've known for a long time that a great deal of Titan's surface is covered with seas of liquid hydrocarbons. (This actually makes it one of the better canidates for having life in the solar system, after of course Earth and Europa.)

It'll look real pretty when someone lights a smoke.  ;7

Re: Other planets have hydrocarbons
Not really, unless you plan to bring your own oxygen.

I think that was a cute plot element in a story I read once that was supposed to take place on Titan.  If you wanted to make fire, you could, but your lighter would need to be filled with oxygen instead of butane.  I want to say this was one of Paul McAuley's stories, but I can't for the life of me remember which one.
