Author Topic: Beams Vs. Shields?  (Read 2522 times)

Is there anyway to make beams impact and damage shields before damaging the hull.  I have tried the flag "-nobeampierce" in the launcher in older builds to no avail, and i have tried putting "no pierce shields" in the weapons.tbl file and still no help.  If anyone knows of a workaround or a build (recient or otherwise) that could help me with this problem?  thanks.

Odd... The "no pierce shields" flag in weapons table should do the trick.
Do not meddle in the affairs of coders for they are soggy and hard to light

Yes, that flag should make it work.  Remember that it has to be in the $Flags: field every beam entry you want it to apply to.  Launcher stuff won't do anything and a more recent build wouldn't fix it, unless it is a bug.  And take note that anti-warship beams do so much damage that most would fry your shields in less than a second anyway.

Anyway make sure you have the weapons.tbl entries set up correctly.  The $Flags field of the weapon you want to change should look something like this:

$Flags: ( "blah" "blah" "no pierce shields" )(blah and blah being flags that were there before, there could be more than two (or less)).

 
the flags are set up correctly and im using beam type 3 (have also tried 1), my beams just go right through the shields

Hmm ... this flag has worked fine for me, at least for anti-fighter beams.  Make sure the flag is spelled correctly, make sure the other ship really has those shields, and has a shield mesh or has the surface shields flag, and make sure the weapon's shield factor isn't something ridiculously high.

 
As a side question, is there any canon reason why beams pierce shields? i thought it was because the generator would overload and explode from the sudden absorbing of energy from the beams.

Maybe beams are so strong it is simply not realistic to stop them via shields. On a second note, I think they're Photon beam cannons. Photons are somewhere between rays and particles AFAIK, so maybe it isn't possible to halt them.

Apparently :v: wasn't paying attention to their contradictary canon.

Although, the tech room description for the lucifer is made during the first time they encountered it, so they wouldn't know the true composure of the beams.
