Doomsdayism in Europe
Question for the European members of this forum: Is doomsdayism popular in Europe like it is in the US?
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Re: Doomsdayism in Europe
I can only say I've never heard the term (doomsday) outside of these forums, so I'd say no, doomsdayism is not popular.

I'd assume you;re talking about doomsday cults...No ive never heard of them outside of the US. Not to say they dont exist here. if they do then they are secret-societies....

There was that domesday fuss about some book a good many years ago

Re: Doomsdayism in Europe
It's a word I invented, but basically I was referring to the tendency for ordinary people (particularly in the US) to easily fall into masshysteria and fear because of doomsday prophecies (or to welcome it in the case of the religious nuts). For example: Right before Y2K there were a great many people in the US who genuinely believed the end of the world was coming in Y2K and started hoarding supplies, and some went so far as to bail out and head for the hills.

At this point in time it's more of a reference to the latest doomsday prophecy: 2012.

I'm not really talking about cults per say, but just normal people being scared ****less and/or believing doom is upon us.

Re: Doomsdayism in Europe
I have a friend that thinks it's true. Gives her a reason not to worry about her life.

"Meh. The world goes boom in 4 years."

Anyway, yeah we have doomsday cults here in Canada. They're called goths.
Fun while it lasted.

Then bitter.

Re: Doomsdayism in Europe
Mostly around here they're religious nuts, the ones who could care less about the economy/environment because The Rapture™ is coming to take them all away to paradise Soon™. Oh, and they approve of wars in the Middle East because it will speed the coming apocalypse.

They vote, too.

Where are you at anyway?

We're screwed.

I won't lie, it's like that pretty bad in America.
I used to be caught up in it as well, which you could see if you look up some old threads like Bible code prophecy.  I was one lost kid. :p
