X300 is a tad bit better then a FX5200.

I know what minor lag equals in most other games and I can tolerate it.  However when you say minor lag in FSO what exactly are we talking about here.

Pretty much the same thing as with other games. A little twitch here and there, especially in BOEs and, to some extent, in asteroid field missions. Like I said, I've played FSO with the MediaVPs (excluding the AdvEffects) on moma's computer with the aforementioned specs and it has been quite enjoyable.

But in regards to the asteroids, use the 3.6.8 MediaVPs instead of the 3.6.10 Betas, since the latter have some serious performance-killer asteroids.

OK thank you for the clarification.  I actually made a mistake with the specs I put down for my old PC.  They actually are:

Pentium 2.60 GHZ with HT
Ge Force 5200 FX 128 MB
512 MB of RAM.

I'm still new to using the Freespace Open.  How do I run the mediavps without including advanced effects?

My primary computer, right now, is a Celeron M-ULV 353 @ 900MHz, 1GB DDR2, GMA900, and two SSDs... all in a chassis half the size of normal notebooks, weighting in at 2.2lbs and with an 8.9" LCD. Now then: once my monitor arrives, the primary title goes to my E2140 @ 3.2GHz, 2GB DDR2, and HD3850.

I have no idea, honestly.  I know it was a rather low-end card even when I purchased this machine four years ago, if that gives you anything to go by.  It has enough features to handle all of the SCP features, outside of the Shader Model 3.0 that's necessary for normal maps.

I'm having some issues with the download.  All the download mirrors refuse to work when its get to the file mv_core.zip

The file mv_adveffects.zip appears to be unable to download as well.  I think the problem may extend to other files as well.

I didn't realize this until the game wouldn't run properly after I download it the first time.  Fixing this issue is beyond my control.  I hope it isn't too difficult to fix.

installer_status.log.txt and installer_error.log.txt are the ones I need.

There are three files and a folder already there.  The folder is named data which I'm assuming should be kept.  The files are mp-710_effects.vp , mp-710_adveffects.vp , and mp-710_models.vp.  What should I do with these three files?

I re-downloaded the game and I looked through the log as far as I can tell I have everything.  However the game won't launch.  I'm honestly not sure why either.  What information do you need to give me a diagnose?  Before you ask I already downloaded and installed the open AL.

Same problem same message.  This is odd however because while I would gladly buy the retail version of FS2 I was able to use FSO without the retail game before.

In future, please attach .txt files. They can be openede with just one click. Attaching 7-Zipped .docs necessitates downloading, extracting and viewing, assuming the user already has 7-Zip/other archive tool and Word.

Actually, it references to the location on the computer of the person who originally coded that part of the game engine. It has nothing to do with your computer.

No, you weren't. FSO won't run without retail FS2 files.

Total conversions such as TBP and WCS will, but FSO won't.

Same problem same message.  This is odd however because while I would gladly buy the retail version of FS2 I was able to use FSO without the retail game before.

The online installer used to download the entire retail game before installing FS2_Open on top of it. It wasn't legal but it didn't seem anyone cared. However now that there is an official distributor for the game it is no longer sensible to do that.

Thanks for clearing everything up for me guys.  I really appreciate it.  As soon as good old games actually "opens" I will buy a copy of Free Space 2.  Which hopefully will be soon.....  I'm assuming that good old games isn't breaking any laws by selling this game.

You can be sure that if GOG was illegally making profit from distributing FS2, we wouldn't be advising our new members to buy FS2 from there.
