Feature idea/request: Mid-campaign feature toggling.
(I saw a feature request topic on the forum and so assume the request freeze has been lifted. If this is not the case, you are welcome to lock this thread and feed me to Carl at you leisure.)

Just a little idea i wanted to float. Would it be possible to have SEXPS that allow FREDers to activate/deactivate FSOpen features and modify their options before and after (or perhaps even during) missions? It may seem a useless feature to some, but i can think of a few interesting possibilities.

For example, if a FREDer had a series of missions in different areas of a starsystem, they could activate the "bloom" feature in missions that are close to a sun (to represent the strong glare) and in missions on the system's edge (to represent frost on the cockpit), but then have it off in other missions.

Naturally, such a feature would need to take into account users whose PCs can't run the feature, so perhaps have it so if the feature has not been set by the player already then the SEXPs will have no effect, or alternatively give users a "bar auto-activation" list they can add to, and any feature put onto that list will be ignored in activation SEXPs.

So yeah, just an idea to pass to those in the know, no idea myself if this is actually possible (Hey, i'm a games conceptual designer in training, crazy ideas are my job!).

Re: Feature idea/request: Mid-campaign feature toggling.
Actually toggling those features might not be a good idea (we don't even have a bloom option), but giving a mission control over the amount of theoretical bloom would be possible.  We don't have a lot of options where I think that would be very useful though, or if so they would detract from the enjoyment of people without those features as they wouldn't get that experience.  So unless it was still just for a visual effect and not to convey any part of a story it would be hard to find a use for.

(we don't even have a bloom option)

*reads posts that mention this via search and realises this (they all show effects made using other programs or hardware modifications)*

heh...heh...heh...  :o

Let this be a prime example of the importance of using the search function thoroughly prior to posting! (such n00bness, and after so many years of being on this board. I am ashamed.)

On topic, in hindsight you are correct, there is no real use for such a command beyond artistic features.
