These were my model contest entries originally, but since it's off (it seems) I'll post the pics for you generall viewing pleasure.

Click for image *with Depth of Field effect FYI*
This was/is a destroyes-class vessel. The large turrets are something new in the anti-cap weapons. The 'barrels' rotate up, when armed (the pic shows the unarmed. Note the tex error :D).
No fighterbay on this one, so perhaps it's a Battleship. Because of liberal use of meshsmooth this model (with turrets) wind up at ~500 kpolys.:o

Old version of the model.
'Finished' model.
This is a ship from the V's concepts. I botched it somewhere during the modeling and decided it looked good 'enough'. There quite a few smoothing errors on this one. But nothing I intend to fix.

I probably left something out, but here it is.

Eh, the hull on the first ship looks...... weird.  Unfinished.

The cockpit on the old and new Crius looks excellent. I'm not too fond of the engines, though. They're very squared-off, whilst the cockpit has a more organic feel. The capship, in the plan views looks great, too. The only thing I don't like there is the big turrets, but that's down to my taste, not any skill or lack of on your part.

I like big turrets, but not the design of these ones, but as Mike said, it's a matter of tastes :)
When you work from a concept, you have to keep the good ideas and modify the wrong ones :)
I know what the concept looks like, your model is quite the same, but it shares the same default, unfortunately :(

Admit it, Ryx. You designed those turrets out of Legos. I think I have all the necessary bits to build those exact turrets. ;)

;)

You know, Lego is becoming more and more specialised these days. Gone are the days that you could buy a crate of 5,000 lego blocks and be content with that; now they have all these doo-hickeys you have to attach to keep up to the 'standard'. :(

Steak, I may have to fly to Australia with the express and sole purpose of beating some sense into you. :D

I actually own more than my own (not inconsiderable) body weight in Lego. Many of the pieces are indeed specialized. This is not a bad thing. You can still buy the boxes with 5000 'standard' bricks. On the other hand, those boxes of bricks won't have some truly useful things, like axles, or long bricks with cross holes, or hinges, or micromotors, or microprocessors, or sensors.

Every brick (with the exception of BURPs, which should be melted into slag) has many different uses. Karim Nassar demonstrated this beautifully, when he took the steering yokes from the SuperCar (very specialized bit) and turned them into the neck pieces for a fully transformable model of the dragon mecha (I can't remember the anime it is from).

Specialization is cool. It just makes your mind work harder, and that's what Legos are all about. :D

The new specialized pieces aren't too bad, but most of the recent models cannot really compete with the old ones, at least in the Technic and Space categories. Some of the new pieces are quite useful, but the official models do not really make good use of them. (the one exception to this is the 8466 4x4 Off-Roader though, which has extremely good general construction)

Kudos to Lego for re-releasing some of the old classics though; that was a very nice move. :) I hope they decide to re-release the legendary 8868 Airtech Claw Rig - my favorite set. ;) I would readily get another one for parts, even though I already have three of them. :D (I am a total Technic addict; got some $4000 worth of Lego Technic sets, collected over 15 years :D )

Technic and Space are my two favorite lines, with Technic showing a strong lead. Transformable and other variable geometry models are my favorite things to build.

I have to agree with you about the box models: very seldom do they take good advantage fo the included parts. I think, though, that part of that is strategy. I think they make goofy models with good parts with the express purpose of giving the kids a cheeseball base to build cool stuff up from.

I didn't know they were rereleasing any of the older models, though. I'd especially like to get a rerelease of the old Galaxy Commander (complete with original decals) and perhaps the Beta Command Base. Heck, I'd accept an UPDATE of the Galaxy Commander using some of the newer pieces that debuted in the Space Police line. I'd like them to bring back the monorails too (now that I can afford them), and perhaps a rerelease of all the SuperCars.

I have a ritual with legos. The first thing I do is build the the box model. Usually, I will immediately tear it back apart and build something cool. If I buy several sets at once (perfect example: the black SuperCar, the yellow super crane and two of the fibre optic sets) I will build everything and leave it for a day. Then, I will tear everything apart and use every single piece from all the sets too build some monstrous creation. Only once this has been done, can they all be disassembled and added to the Lego Collective.

A notable exception: My StarWars and Bionicles sets are all kept seperate from the main collective. I have no idea why.

:wtf:

anyway, the large turrets originally looked like something from WWII, only worse. If it's converted for FS, then the cannons will have to be remade, assuming I keep them.

The design image was made after the model was 'completed'. So the design came from  me.:)

I still have about 1000 of those little lego blocks and 100 of those big ones... somewhere.... what a mess

But... but... that's just the problem! I can't find those huge cartons anymore! So when I look, I'm stuck with all these pieces which only fit into others certain ways and not enough basics to build them all together! :o
