Problems installing Fall of Vasuda Prime extended cutscene

I just did a fresh install of FSPort 3.1.1 and I followed the instructions given for installing the extended cutscene.  I used VPView and extracted the missions from the fsport-missions.vp and used every build I have of Fred 2 to try and open the freespace.fc2 but it says "Couldn't open Campaign file!".  I tried opening Freespace2.fc2 and it works.  Any clues as to what's wrong?

Why not open it with Notepad?

Well for your personal reference, most things FRED/Freespace related can be opened and checked with notepad/wordpad, except texture files etc etc. Useful for when FRED locks you out of a mission for whateverwhich reason.

Logged and very much appreciated.  I'm a die-hard fan but I'm not very good when it comes to editting files and manipulating them yet.
