I don't know about the rest of you guys, but since the 3.6.10 mvps/exes, the ai-guard sexp is pretty much useless to me now. I was just playing a mission I had FRED-ed about a squadron intercepting the remnants of Bosch's fleet on their blockade running frenzy as part of a campaign I was FRED-ing to keep myself occupied. I assigned two wings of Rhea class bombers http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTB_Rhea escorted by two wings of Perseus fighters. Problem being, the only thing the Fighters seemed to want to do was form up on me. The mission specifically was about the squadron mounting a snap raid on four NTF stragglers (An Orion, a deimos and two fenris cruisers), the Orion spits out two wings of Lokis and Hercs, and two wings of medusa's to contend with the GTVA's own Deimos and Sobek that they've thrown at the stragglers. I came under fire wayyy to many times than I should've with an escort, everytime I looked back I saw my escort pumping their burners trying to keep up with me instead of trying to get rid of the Loki on my tail. On a different instance in the mission, I got the better of another Loki that tried to fill me full of uber-xaser (Subach) only to see a perseus from my escort at the top right of my screen trying to stay in line with me instead of assisting with the Loki that had just been attacking me.

I encountered the same thing in "The Sicilian Defense", the Myrmidons did nothing! As soon as I'd stop to rearm they'd flock around me like ducks on a bread slice, but when the hostiles got near they weren't doing a damn thing. I've played this game long enough to know escort fighters work better on a C-3-9, but I FRED-ed a mission a few months ago that was similar to a revised version of bearbaiting (3 Wings of Boanerges escorted by 12 perseus interceptors disarm a Sath and call in the cavalry on it, it was kind of a proof to myself that the GTVA doesn't need the Colly to get the upper hand on the Sath), I had a wing of maras initially escorting the bombers, as soon as the maras got within 3000 metres the fighters sped off and promptly got the remaining fighters to piss off while I contended with the Sath's long range flak.

Has anyone else got this issue as well, or have I just become ignorant?

I've been playing allot of FreeSpace 2 the last few weeks with one of the latest EXEs and the newest Media VP files.  For one the game looks incredible...it has a new lease on life.  On top of playing select FS2 missions I've also played all of Silent Threat: Reborn and the entire FreeSpace 1 campaign (FSPort).  In all of these instances everything was as I remembered it (except more awesome looking)...I'm a very tactical flyer.  I like to issue Alpha to protect that ship and Gamma to attack that one and so forth.  I spent almost as much time issuing orders as I do flying.

No issues that I noticed.

So I have to ask...are you sure?  Have you checked?  Replay...ignore the mission.  Order the AI around and see what they do.

I already look stupid talking to other people on TeamSpeak...people think I'm talking to my computer.  If I used this...they'd be right :D

I concur Freespace Open 3.6.10 everything looks great, and the AI are indeed meant to protect Alpha Wing, well whatever I think I was just really annoyed at the time, I'll play a few more missions and have another look at it

I've noticed a bug in Diaspora where AI are pretty useless at the start of a mission and then proceed to stop and do nothing at all once given an order. It's quite possible this behaviour is related to whatever caused the problem with guarding.

Dilmah G, what happens if you tell them to attack something?

I told Epsilon Wing (the only wing whose initial order priority wasn't over 89) to attack a Deimos, from what I saw they engaged the Deimos, but they took a lot of fire. On an unrelated note, recommend that someone with some coding expertise with FS AI lower the distance at which AI bombers release their warheads, back on topic. The AI seem to do what they're told, my problem being that fighters on the ai-guard sexp fail to do anything save form on the wing they've been assigned to protect. I don't think I'm encountering the same bug as you are.

But ... ai-guard is not very good for defending wings of ships as far as I know.

mmm, well I think it was just I was extremely annoyed when I posted, I played my remake of High Noon with a fighter escort and they did their job. And when assigned to a wing they just protect the wing leader.
