Message to mods-[This does relate to freespace, but i think it belongs here, because this is a place for news and modern discussion. And i think the croud more often talks about poilitics and religons here more then in General Freespace. So mods plz don't move.]

Ok. Lets say Sol (earth) finds out teh Shivans are coming to assrape us and destroy all of humanity. Which of the modern (or past) religons would rise to become the modern day, Hammer of Light.

AFAIK they believed the Shivans would come and cleanse all the world of their sins or impurities. All the shivans really did was kill everybody.

That aside, Tho it is a little of a stretch, the first thing that comes to mind when I think of extremists, is Islam. I know its only a small portion thats radical and all, but they want to kill westerners or unbelievers etc. Kinda like cleansing?

It's fairly safe to say that the HoL of the FreeSpace universe is based heavily on a combination of radical Christianity, radical Islam, and a smattering of doomsday cults for good measure.

The HoL works because the Shivans are the gods of their legends, the Great Destroyers and cleansers of the cosmos. I imagine if Jehovah appeared in the sky over Iran and started tossing fireballs, there'd be a huge number of people willing to hasten the end times. In fact there's quite a few modern political leaders who are willing to throw the fireballs themselves, with or without Jehovah.
