Turrets and paths what's the difference ?

I am curious and I didn't found a related thread yet :

In newer models the cap-ship turrets have paths, in older versions of the same ship (i.e. Typhon) not (also with some of Scooby's brilliant models).

What's the difference in having paths for turrets or not ?

I think turret paths are for the AI to properly try to disarm the ship.

Indeed. Ideally, you would have paths for every subsystem so the AI knows the best place to shoot at it from.  They're not strictly necessary, but it helps.
