BTW: anyone have any experience with GMAX? I tried it but don't really remember - is it easy or a hassle?

From what I hear, it's MAX without the rendering stuff and some of the advanced features. Should be pretty easy and powerful. :)

Argh is what I say - if they left rendering in I would have had a perfect alternative to 3d MAx or Lightwave... and could have made those pretty renders you guys do ;)

They took it out for a good reason. gmax is only meant to be for people who want to model and texture for games like FS2K2 and Q3A. If they wanted to strip something from gmax, rendering capability would be a smart thing to strip.

Meanwhile, I actually got a fully-fledged feature in my favourite computer mag that shows the ins and outs of gmax. Very nice. :)
- Eddie Kent Woo, Setekh, Steak (of Steaks), AWACS. Seriously, just pick one.

Indeed, the corporations have to think about money too.. still... (although I'm sure GMAX has some EULA to balance and they get their money from game developers...)

And what magazine is this? I want to take a lookie  (CG magazine had some stuff about it but not much)

Well, if you have used MAX before, it's just install and go.;)

Otherwise, do the tutorials. They're good.

I tried out GMAX a while ago just out of curiosity; it is actually almost the same thing as 3DS MAX as far as modeling goes. The main problem is the proprietary file format, but someone out there might have made a gmax->3ds converter. ;)

The only FPS games I have created extensive modifications for are Doom and Descent 2. Doom was my first experience into modding, after which I got very, very heavily into modifying both Descent 2 and C&C: Red Alert (an RTS game) for a few years and learned a lot about how games in general work. After that came Freespace, and then of course, Freespace 2. ;)

BTW: anyone know of a reliable place where I could actually download GMAX?

But then they wouldn't be selling that many copies of the regular MAX, would they? ;)
