I was just wondering about your input on this idea... I know its a tad unrealistic for the FS2 enviroment, but its on almost every other 3d game. Including descent, quake, doom, etc. Basically, you create a ship thats a box with a red cross on it. The ship randomly appears via no warp effect. It does not interact with the game for, other ships (ai controlled) just ignore it and can even fly right through it. When you get near it however, the box disapeers and you get your hull integrity restored. Or your subsystems all repaired, or whatever else the 'crate' might do.

Thoughts? Input? It was just a random thought that popped into my head. :doubt:

Right but the games with crates has usually story like this "this is war with big alien monsters. Now kill them"

Well freespace has the same story too but it's made more realistic. In fs you're not just some guy hunting down monsters but you're a pilot of the 3rd fleet.

You could use some sexps and creative usgae of weapon effects to make a cargo container sparkle and disappear (like it was being transportered).

Make an invisible ship that docks with the cargo. When you press 1 the ship fires it's no-damage, sparkly weapons at the cargo which disappears, giving the illusion of transport.

Or some kind of ship that has a really short range beam. The beam fires at the cargo which disappears while being hidden by the beam.

Could be very handy for a campaign.

or you could just model a crate thats got a mass of 0, you fly through it and by use of the waypoints sexps make an upgrade, but like Ten said, things like that are usually kiddy games with little or no plot.  They're still fun, they are just a bit lame when compared to FS2.

They could be used in Multiplayer dogfight and/or TvT missions.
Since these don't really have a story, the power-ups would be quite useful there.

And i quite like Quake 3

Realistic? A space fighter sim, by definition, is completely unrealistic from the jump. Aside from that, those pilots in the 3rd fleet are just some guy hunting down monsters. Actually, come to think of it, FS dispenses with the 'hunting' and just drops you where there will be monsters or where there already are monsters and has you shoot them up.

Not dissing Freespace, just pointing out the logical incongruity of your statement.
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

Did you write "The Computers of Star Trek"? ;)
Anyway, you're right, but it doesn't really make sense that a fighter can run into a box and get its hull repaired. The other stuff...well, that's too subtle for us ;)

anyway, FS2 is supposed to be a space sim, not a shoot them up, so, no power up for me thanks

Ok I'm normally against it but I've played MW 3 and 4 and there is a neat thing they do. They have a mech bay that you dock with (but can be destroyed by weapons fire (you or enemy so watch your fire) after a brief time of sparks flying (simulating welders patching the armor and ammo reloading) you are good to go. Now if you really wanted to bring that concept into the game do it up right with style. A carrier class vessel can offer 2 options. 1.) a totally new fighter (I barely brought this one back but I need to get back out there - they need me!) lol or 2.) A much longer dock time than a support ship but all systems and hull integrety is restored as the mechanics race to get your fighter back into the battle to save (whatever)... How's that compared to the "ghostly flying box"?
Don't think of it as being outnumbered. Think of it as having a wide target selection !
