Resurrecting dead ships?
I asked this question elsewhere but this is probably the more appropriate place to re-ask this:

Is it possible to respawn a ship (either enemy or friendly) after it has exploded and then place it somewhere randomly near the player's ship?  I wanted to create the impression of a large battle going on between two fleets while the hero is assigned to locate and then take out an enemy base.  As the gamer is flying around searching, I'd like to give the impression of ships in constant battle, blowing one another up (these background ships would be made weaker than normal just to ensure a steady impression of ships dying off).

Ideally, I'd like to have just 12-15 ships on each side being respawned over and over again...

Just use the ship-create SEXP.

Although if you're making a mission where you have to do this you're into Endorian territory and should really have a lot of FRED experience to attempt it.
Karajorma's Freespace FAQ. It's almost like asking me yourself.

Yes I realize that, although for many of the canonical DS9 battles which I want to recreate there were generally large battles taking place in the background as the Defiant flew around.  I've already done a few test missions without many ships other than the core ones and it didn't have the same epic-ness to it.

If the ship is not targetable just make it a wing.  Cap ships can be in wings they just don't work well if there are more then one in a wing.
