Raleigh, N.C. — Lance Cpl. Patrick Malone was relaxing on his bunk at an Iraqi combat base when a direct superior interrupted his late-night movie.
It was time for a game Marines sometimes play to build confidence in colleagues: Point a gun at a comrade and ask, “Do you trust me?”
Cpl. Mathew Nelson raised his weapon — and the 9 mm pistol went off, striking Malone in the head. The higher-ranking Marine rushed to the wounded man’s side and tried to perform CPR, but Malone was mortally wounded.
Of all the stupid, irresponsible..... Words pretty much fail me as to how completely idiotic and brainless this is.
Now, recruits, what is your first weapons safety rule?
TREAAAT EVERY WEAPON AS IF IT WERE LOADED!!!
I don't think so, let's try again and see if we can get some volume! RECRUITS, what is your first weapons safety rule?
TREAAAT EVERY WEAPON AS IF IT WERE LOADED!!!
Outstanding! And now for our second safety rule, let's hear it, recruits!
NEVER POINT A WEAPON AT ANYTHING YOU DO NOT INTEND TO SHOOT!!
I don't think so, recruits, are we having a volume problem today? 'Cause I know your Drill Instructors are just waiting to play some games... let's try again. What is the second safety rule?
etc, etc
3rd safety rule: Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire
4th safety rule: Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire.
And on and on, for a week straight. Get caught doing anything that remotely
looks unsafe, and you will be off the range as a safety violator, play some fun DI games, possibly get dropped a week or two in training (have to do it over).
Some people just don't learn I guess... there's no excuse, Marines are all trained to know better than that.
