Need Info on Making: Shields, LODs, Debris, rotating submodel, thrusters in Truespace
I need information on making shields, LODs, debris, rotating submodels and turrets, and thrusters in Truespace.

I need to know when to glue lights, how to texture thrusters, when to glue as sibling and HOW to glue as child.

Give me the info on making these in Truespace steps step by step and I will be very... happy. :D

NOTE: All information pieces I receive here will be compiled into a manual for newbies in modding.  [Remember by Freespace Modding Manual Project?]

There's a lot I'm sure I don't know, and I haven't made any ships with with multiple detail levels and shields (yet) but what I do know is compiled below into my Turreting 101 page. (See below.) And it has some non-turreting info too. There are plenty of topics on things, though they can be hard to find by searching, and some of them have instructions that contradict what others have said. My turreting info is from what I know and have done after reading info by other people. :)

Unless you're using TS1 and not using FSMM. Then it's interesting and somewhat useful. :)

I know how to work through the additional pof data in PCS/Modelview/FSMM2 but hardly know a thing about any type of modeling. :p

I know about modeling, but not much about data editing; well, not enough to make a great model - the coordinates are bugging me!

Make sure in Truespace that the ship is facing southwest from the original view in a scene.

i like the idea of a manual that covers almost any aspect of modding freespace2...
there are a lot of manuals out there, most of em very useful, but far from covering all the stuff...they just give the first steps in the big world of moding:)
the second steps may be found on this board mainly...there are a lot of incredibly useful posts that give infos about points that are missing from the manuals.
all the other steps ar leaved at your own, you have to try and make your own errors...so i think that a more organic and complete manual, a "fs2 modding enciclopedia" would be extremely useful for a lot of people, even for me, and not only the "pure newbies"
I would so be extremely honored of helping you in this project with the few i know, my only doubt is....
will it be still actual with the source code o fs2 released?
maybe you should wait a few wees/months to se what will come out about source modifcations, or, at least, be prepared to update it often, or maybe to prepare a section about the code updates and what they will change about the moding procedure

IMHO it's better to check direction from the top down view: Make sure it's facing left. :)

Sigh!
I know that.
I was talking about adding gun points and engine glows in PCS or FMM2, which is (to put it mildly)....  long... difficult.....frustrating..!

Can anyone tell me HOW (not how it looks) to get the correct hierarchy after you made all the LODs, debris and engine thrusters (should I make them for all LODs, or just the main one?)

Personally, the source code developed by individual people wouldn't make any severe changes.  For example Boubbau (Spelling?) is making ion beams on standard fighter primary gunpoints.  This is a very easy modification to accomodate.  Because that the source code project is not unified (with exception of FSF), it wouldn't make severe engine-altering changes.

we are just at the beginning of the soure code project....it will go out of the actual anrchy soon to be bringed in a more efficent organization...or so i hope:p
