Hello fellow hard-lighters, I'm really new here and unless you frequent the IRC or the Blue Planet VA forum, you probably don't know me. So... hello.

Anyway, several of my friends and I have just started our own anime blog here and we really need to get some readers.

Anyone who likes anime/Japanese stuff, please keep an eye on our progress and leave a comment every now and then. It would be much appreciated.

I always take it that one post to advertise is not spamming, however, you might have done better getting to know the Forum first before posting, since, as can be seen from above, people tend to assume advertisments from new members must be a bot of some description.

I'll leave this for now, but I'll keep an eye on the thread, as BW says, if you aren't interested, don't post.

Most boards I've visited have some kind of forum or area where you can advertise, but I couldn't find any place on HL where this thread would have been appropriate. I asked some guys on the IRC where they thought a good place to put this thread would be and they said General Discussion, so... whatever. Obviously that was incorrect and I apologize if this came across as spam. You can delete this thread if you need to.

It's not nearly as quality as many fanboys attribute to it, and its narrative progression devolves into a train-wreck on a few occasions (especially in the second season), but it's a horrifically enjoyable series on the base level of inexplicable plot twists and giant robots fighting, at least in my opinion.

There's an episode of Code Geass that features an alternative interpretation if you are a minimally decent chess player.

Spoiler:

The episode where he plays a game of chess against Schneizel. Normally I'm used to writers using poor chess analogies or even making the characters play badly, after all, most don't bother to do the research. But this episode takes the cake, first Lelouch says something similar to "If the king doesn't lead, how can he expect his subordinates to follow?" which is horrible, horrible advice in chess, probably the worst possible. Then Schneizel moves king next to the opposite king, an illegal move since it's forbidden. The standard procedure would be for Lelouch to tell Schneidel something like "That's an illegal move, play another move retard.". Instead we were treated as if it was perfectly legal. The only conclusion we can make is that Lelouch never won against Schneidel because he is the only player on Earth that sucks even more than his brother at chess.

Code Geass was totally a trainwreck, I agree. But it was still awesome for sheer over-the-top roller-coaster intensity. Had more FEED ME lines than Shatner and Brian Blessed put together. ALLLLLL HAIIIIIILLLLLL BRIIITAAAANNNNNIIIIAAAAA!!! And our banner will change occasionally. Lelouch's smug mug will not dominate our site eternally.

Anyway, I'm actually following the desecrated remains of Haruhi Suzumiya right now, and I'm looking for something else to heal my wounded fanboy soul. I've heard mixed reviews of K-ON, and I don't really get what bakemonogatari is about. Maybe Eden of the East, but everything is well into the season by now. I have a lot of catching up either way. Anyone know of a show they would really recommend?

You nailed it in one with Eden of the East, and there's no "in-season" to worry about, as the series proper has already concluded after eleven episodes.  (There will be two theatrical movies at the end of this year and some point next year to finish things up, but the series ends at a good stopping point.)  It's a very unique show, a term that can't be applied to a whole ton of anime series, to the point where I don't know if I could do it much justice in words.  Suffice it to say that the main hook of the plot is rather fascinating, and the characters are all sorts of fun.  Definitely recommend it.
