i toyed with illustrator awhile back to make textures, but it turns out it doesnt work very well.

I tried Coral Draw ages ago, and came to the same conclusion

gimp is a raster program and usually the vector tools arent as good as on a dedicated vector graphics proggie. even photoshop has fairly useful vector tools, but still they arent really designed for the kind of stuff you can do in a full vector package.
