Perhaps it's what became Ghosts Of Valor, Spuds also wanted to call it "FS3".
Though I think that if it really was he, there wouldn't be a problem with the name and it would end up as "Expedition Shiva".

It could also end up like Descent 4: Invasion, which was cancelled because of a THQ cease-and-desist or something like that. :nervous:

Oh you still believe in fairy tales like Santa, the Easter Bunny, and free market competition principles?

Descent 4: Invasion was supposed to be a fan-made sequel, but then it was cancelled because of issues regarding the use of Descent in the name.

The original sequel by :v: was simply titled Descent IV. GeoMod was made for Descent IV, but eventually became the technology used to create Red Faction.

In some sense, you could say that the common thing that both FreeSpace and Red Faction have with Descent is that they use fragments of Descent's code. In FreeSpace, it's probably too small to notice, but when it comes to Red Faction, it's a bit more obvious.

It would be great if we had more Descent games, but D3 at least ended it's storyline properly (D2 was a huge cliffhanger, or so I heard).
FS2 was definitely set up to have a sequel and ended up not receiving it.
That may be the reason for such active and large community though, a lot of people wanted to write their own ending at some point.
Also, BP and a lot of other campaigns wouldn't be created if there was an FS3 (though I doubt that announcing it now would have ended BP, it's just too good IMHO).

Well, I think the original intent of the first members of HLP was to keep the whole game alive. It still is.

The next intent was to make something that would fit in with what :v: has done, hence there are numerous post-Capella mods.

All that is just speculation, though. :nervous:

Uh, Descent 4: Invasion was canceled because the project was going nowhere, not because of a cease and desist (at least, from what I know). Besides, my music for it sucked :P

Wow - I never knew THQ went after people who were making a D4. And yet, they leave alone suff like the Freespace port. I wonder what that's about - relative importance (to them) of the two franchises most likely...

Descent probably had a little bit more exposure to the world than FreeSpace. It was Doom, Duke and Descent back in 1995, after all.

I'm fairly certain that the cancellation of that Descent 4 project had nothing to do with THQ, actually.  If my memory serves, the problem is that Interplay had still licensed the right to develop a new Descent title to "Parallax Software," which essentially consisted of Mike Kulas and Matt Toschlog.  They didn't agree to waive that right, and so the project stalled.  Interplay themselves were very co-operative, I think.
