onemanga going down
well it looks like the finally did it, the web's most popular place to go get manga translated into English within three days of it's Nipponese release without paying any money for it has finally been targeted for destruction by the old copyright death star.

to view the flaming wreckage go here.

Re: onemanga going down
The thing is, these closers won't affect the actual scanlation groups in the least, as they'll continue to release via more traditional methods.  But I'm honestly glad to see the big aggregator sites being targeted like this, as they've been having a demonstrable negative impact on the industry, and their whole concept is rather scummy to begin with.

Re: onemanga going down
I would by MSLF, except, well, the writers have taken leave of their senses and started whacking characters they created and realized too late were as powerful as the main ones, rather than trying to give them a role in the story or carefully write around them. They could at least man up and own to their ****ups rather than killing off/leaving-in-the-hospital-for-the-rest-of-the-manga characters people like.

The hilarous thing is if this site/mangafox/etc was hosted in Japan, this wouldn't be possible. You can't defend a copyright there, only demand reasonable royalities based on sales. Hence the doujin industry.

Did I say anything against downloading series you can't buy?  If you want to get them, just go to the scanlation group's site and download them directly from there.  The big aggregation sites don't serve a real purpose beyond lining their own pockets.

No, but you made it seem like this one site going down would prevent you from getting stuff. :p

Re: onemanga going down
the big aggregation sites server the purpose of making it easier to find and read manga, the afore mentioned LatBH I would have never stumbled upon it if it were not for OM. this won't stop me from getting my manga for free, but it will make it less convenient.

Nipponese

What's with the sudden popularity of a word that has been obsolete since the end of the 1940s?

Re: onemanga going down
As far as I know, "Nippon" is still the proper name for the country in its original language ("Japan" being a Pacific mispronunciation that got picked up by English-speakers... or something along those lines).

As for why it's become popular among anime/manga fans, I blame those fans who just have to throw random Japanese words into their speech. I've also heard it used sarcastically by detractors.

That's also sort of the exact reason why they should be taken down, though, at least from the license-holders' perspectives.  It's one thing to have a bunch of individual sites out there for the groups actually doing the scanlating (and indeed, there are several different torrent-aggregation sites for recently-released material that you can use), but quite another to have a single uber-site that locally hosts the images of thousands of manga, including a large number of licensed titles.  Not only that, but these sites manage to rip off not only the authors and rights-holders, but even the scanlation groups who actually did the translating: there have been a number of cases where series are uploaded without the group's permission, and a few of these sites have brought in big bucks via ads and/or donations despite said scanlation groups wanting to remain strictly not-for-profit.  They're scummy entities no matter how you look at them.

Oh? I'd never pay for Naruto or Bleach, but I would pay for LatBH if I could get my hands on it in English, I never would have found it if it was not for OM, so by shutting down OM they have lost potential sales from anyone else stumbling upon it.

3 points:
1) I am a weaboo fagot.
2) The recent iteration of the 'Jap' debacle.
3) When I misspelled Japanese as Japonese Firefox suggested Nipponese.
these three factors combined led me to my choice of verbiage.

There are a few good points (and some hilarious sarcasm) mixed in with that mess. :p

Edit: The response to that article is even better.

Kind of sad to see it go... ... but there are and will be other sites aswell.

Now that I really think about it, I can't recall the last time I went there. It's been a while.
I've been cheating OM for almost 2 years now I guess.
Habeeb it...
