Two major problems: Cutscene and sound haywiring & Specific mission freezing.
Hello everyone, this is going to be a long post. I seem to be suffering from these two major problems that i have not encountered before, and i was hoping i could get some help.

Let me begin by saying, I decided to reinstall Freespace 2 GOTY Edition for the second time this year because of the modification Blue Planet: Age of Aquarius Director's Cut and it's recent 2nd, War in heaven. This will be important later on.

Instead of using a an-powerful launcher which downloaded several mods along with FS-Open, because i do not remember the name of it, I downloaded the 3.6.12.Final Exes and go from there.

Now, as soon as the game accesses any voice work outside of the of the game (Briefings with videos, in other words), half way through, it stutters and seconds later, it cuts the sound and music altogether. At first i thought it was the cutscenes due to heavy CD wear affecting the install, because i have had this problem before playing retail several years ago, but even the voicework from the modification stutters when the Monologues without cameras play halfway through.

So far the only options that are available to me (as far as i know) is to change the sound from Generic software to my Sound card on the launcher (which i have done before in other old games, producing rather disastrous  ear-deafening results) and perhaps downloading the .ogg cutscenes provided in the thread below this one. Which i will try now.

If this would solve the first problem, i would still have a problem with the second. There is also a specific mission in a Nebula on the Blue Planet modification, where as soon as i am at least 2000m away from a group of Nahema bombers attacking the sanctuary, the game completely freezes up, resulting in a message similar to what you see on a memory dump.

I appreciate any and all advice, and i hope to hearing from any of you who may or may not have suffered from this, and have dealt with the problem.

Read the FSO FAQ stickied here. Follow its guide on how to produce an fs2_open.log. Post it here.

Re: Two major problems: Cutscene and sound haywiring & Specific mission freezing.
Well, this is puzzling (to me at least). Running it the normal way twice yesterday caused the same problem, but it did not freeze in debug mode today. As a result, i am posting the debug log from yesterday, where i faced the same problem twice, and the open.log from debug mode where i encountered no problems.

Two things i would like to mention: One, the briefing dialogue on this mission did not have any stutters yesterday, but EVERY mission before that did. And second, if it WAS listed, i did not finish the mission, because i could not read the subsystem targetting below due to the resolution, and i could not dock with the objective. It's kind of embarrassing really.

58.kb log is from yesterday when i encountered the problems.

125.kb log is the one from today, where i encountered no problems using debug mode.

EDIT:I am going to play it the normal way, and see if i recreate the problem.

Code: [Select]
Initializing OpenGL graphics device at 640x480 with 16-bit color...
  Initializing WGL...
  Requested WGL Video values = R: 5, G: 6, B: 5, depth: 16, double-buffer: 1
  Actual WGL Video values    = R: 8, G: 8, B: 8, depth: 32, double-buffer: 1

This is a problem. choose a higher resolution, at a higher colour depth.

Also, you should enable a few of the graphics features in the Launcher. You're missing out on a lot of graphical goodness.

Yep, up the resolution. I've heard of sound problems like this before too...maybe we should give him a 3.6.13 build?

Can't hurt to try, I guess...

Mugsy, please try a nightly build. These are found here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=173.0

Re: Two major problems: Cutscene and sound haywiring & Specific mission freezing.
Oh good lord, I remember it now. Before I read anything, I accidentally used the Debug.exe on my first ever running of the game. That log that you are reading is me remembering that this game required me to change the resolution outside of the game, and then i changed everything to my specifications and ran the regular .exe. So all the problems i encountered are not shown in the debug mode. I apologize for the false information.

That being said, i am still going to try to recreate the problem in debug mode windowed, and debug mode fullscreen (where i got the problems in the first place). The 16-bit was just something i overlooked as a result of me being frantic about playing Freespace 2 again.

It's what happens when you switch from a launcher that downloads everything for you, to doing most of the stuff manually without reading anything at first.

EDIT: I appreciate it. If all else fails, i'm going to try the 3.6.13 build you have provided me.

Re: Two major problems: Cutscene and sound haywiring & Specific mission freezing.
Update. So far, any nightly build that are available have given me a critical error as soon as i accessed them or opened them with the launcher.exe. At first it was because the latest ones had SSE and SSE2s.exes, so I waited until there was one with a regular INF.exe and i got the same deal.

I am considering reinstalling, using Turey's Magic-installer/downloader-tron, and stick to the 3.6.9 version where i had no problems and wait until 3.6.13 is officially released.

Could you post the error, and a fresh debug log? Going back to 3.6.9 would...not be ideal.
