Well all the previous times I came back to Freespace, it was usually just to FS2 campaign, and I never really looked into mods, MediaVPs or any of that, so essentially I've just started playing FSP with the first graphical updates I've seen since it was released. To anyone that did any work on what I'm seeing, you are blowing my mind .

The plan is of course, to burn through FSP, STR and FS2, then start checking out all these mods that are all over the place. I'm wondering, is there any campaigns that are considered top shelf quality that are generally seen accepted as canon in continuing (or precluding) the story Volition told? I can understand such a question might be ridiculous, and there's probably plenty of debate over what's real and what's not, and I'm sure there are some borderline campaigns.

The only one I've seen that I would guess is accepted as canon would be the Blue Planet series? Maybe it's prominence is just due to some recent limelight so I could be way off, but the production values behind it really appear impressive.

Anyway, without trying to start any fights, are there any ball parks answers to my question?

You've hit the nail on the head re BP - WiH is relatively new (and of a very high standard) so at the moment it's getting a lot of discussion. In days gone by, Inferno and Derelict had a similar "pseudocanon" vibe about them. The fact is that no campaign, be it a prequel like the Terran-Vasudan War Project, or the Ancient-Shivan War, or a sequal like BP, Derelict, the Procyon Insurgency etc. etc. has any canonical value beyond that of any other. The universe is completely open, and nobody will jump on you for contradicting one campaign or another.

There are one or two small things that are used more often, like the nickname "Zods" for Vasudans, but these are few and far between (I can't actually think of any others, top of my head), and even stuff like this isn't set in stone.

if it ain't V, it ain't canon in any way shape or form (and this coming from a BP team member)

BP is, we like to think, pretty good, but it also uses a very different storytelling style than V did, with a lot more focus on both tactics and detail. INFR1 was closer to V's storytelling style but probably lower-quality overall

my advice would just be to play everything and see what you like.

Yup, Bat is canon, and klicks is used in the retail FS2 campaign and hence is canon too.

The GTF Ulysses entry is the first thing everyone sees upon entering the Ship Database. You can't seriously believe that it's non-canon.

Isn't that just because a lot of fans like to set their campaigns "Post-Capella", and make a campaign along the lines of civic unrest/NTF remnats/HOL resurrection/Shivan remnants/pirates (delete whichever is inapplicable) threatening the stability of the already battered GTVA leaving the pilot to save the GTVA again?

Well the term AFAIK has been adopted by the fan community but was never used in the original campaigns.
