Me have an idea! You can already do this via scripts, but if you are not a coder, you have a problem. Right now standard explosion effect is rather awful. Engine generates these huge ugly explotions and it doesn't look right. Well, I was wondering if it could be fixed somehow. My idea is to modify POF a little so that everyone could add explosions to the model. What I mean: you have a capital size ship and you want it to have better explosion effect than default one. And you'd have an additional option in PCS: to set the explosions. I think it could work like glow points somehow. You can set glow point's position, when it appears, when it disappears and what effect does it use. With explosions it could work in a similar way. Position, size, effect and time after which explosion appears. That's the general idea. It is kind of chaotic due to my language skillz, but what do you think about it?

I can't comment on the technical aspect, but one thing's for certain, it's much better implemented than, say, the explosions in X3 Terran Conflict. But yes, explosions are sometimes way too big, but remember that it kind of serves a purpose: capital ships for example are "peeled" after they start exploding. That is to say that the normal textures start being peeled back to instead reveal more wreck-like textures. Also obscured by big explosions is the process of them actually breaking up. With smaller, more precise explosions, capital ship destruction might look a bit weird. These are my observations regarding this matter, anyway.
