It's a growing trend unfortunately, the phrase 'We' seems to get changed to "I" more and more. So, for example, the rule of "The people should be able to worship any God they choose" gets interpreted as "The people should be free to worship any God I choose".

In many ways it's a complete bastardisation of everything that was intended by the formation of the "Hands off" mentality by the founding fathers.

This is normally where I invoke the "I'm glad I live in Canada," but I know things are no better here.

Ironically, it's because the protesters have a far more tribal mindset than the Muslims. 'Different is bad' is something that humanity dragged with it from Prehistory, it is a self-defence mechanism that has become a liability, and more advanced cultures are working on improving the problem with it. Problem is, you get into the sticks with most countries and you will see attitudes becoming more and more tribal the further you go.

That doesn't mean that these societies don't include intelligent and tolerant people, merely that, as the density of population decreases, the willingness to accept change or diversity also decreases for the majority, because experience is replaced with assumption.

 :wtf:

As a counterpoint to your highly scientific hypothesis no doubt based on years of careful study I'd like to point out that Europe is more densely populated than the US and even less tolerant of minorities.

The usual explanation of redneck racism is that social conservatism and income are negatively correlated.

Jeez....Europe is NOT a single country with a solid population density and tolerance level throughout any more than the US is, that's my entire point, you cannot apply, for example Madrids racial setup and reaction to it to Londons, you can't even do that with Birmingham, and that's only 100 miles away.

And yes, believe it or not, I have done research on this, and so have many other people.

Edit: And to re-iterate, I didn't mention 'Rednecks' or 'Racism', I mentioned rural communities, their tendency toward a more 'tribal' mindset and their inexperience in dealing with multi-culturalism, and, as I already stated, not just in the US, Russia, for example, have a big problem with it. That inexperience breeds mistrust, and when you have groups that are actively fuelling this mistrust in many cases, it only amplifies the problem.

Interesting. I still don't see how someone in the city or suburbs would be any less racist, though. There really isn't such a thing as "community" in western societies anymore and most people who live in suburbs or in an apartment seem to barely know their neighbors or flatmates. They might as well live in the middle of nowhere. I also think it would have more to do with the relative proportions of different minorities. Someone living in a gentrified part of town or in the inner city might see few blacks or whites in their area, respectively, regardless of population densities.

I'm sorry I offended your sensibilities. You know what I meant.

Actually, Western Societies do have communities, if anything, they have too many communities, that's the problem, there's Black communities, Christian communities, Muslim communities, the list goes on eternally. The difference is the situation they are forced to live in with regards to their daily lives. In a city, where population density is higher, those communities are forced to interact on a daily basis, and so, over time, a level of understanding is reached, stereotypes are replaced with actual knowledge.

Take the video listed above. Those people aren't chanting because they hate Muslims, they are chanting because they hate the stereotype of Muslims, that they are 'obsessed with Sharia law' (which involves a great deal more than "Stone the women and Infidels!" attitude it's portrayed as) and that they don't believe in human rights. This is taken to the point where, despite the fact the meeting is about Womens' Rights, these people choose to shout the self-same rhetoric in complete ignorance of the purpose of the meeting. The problem is, a lot of these people aren't the sort who would choose to learn more with an open mind, and the situation in less densely populated areas is such that nobody has to, they can sit back and rely on stereotypes.
