I think it's meant for maneuverability, so it would work, based on the principles of torque. But it's still to phallic. Maybe if it sloped back at the end and/or narrowed to a point instead of growing at the end?
I was refering to the fact that it shifts the ship's center of mass so much that it would be more likely to spin in place than to actually go anywhere under main power. Unless there were main engines on top and on the strut and they were balanced power-wise. Not a big deal (especially since FS2 doesn't pay any attention to real physics anyway). What could be cool, though really hard to play, would be to set the center of rotation somewhere on that strut and try to fly it that way. That would be really tough in some respects, and would alter gameplay considerably.
