FRED help (please don't laugh)
Please note : yes i HAVE beam-free-all-ed (and turret free all)

I feel a bit of a spazz for asking this, but why arent my cap ships attacking.  They ARE on different teams, they have AI goals to chase, they are in beam range, but they just circle each other and you have to give the attack order personally, which i want to aviod.

Oh and another thing, how do i get the head animations to stay up for longer than half a second when a message is sent?

Head anims are tied into the length of the wave file.

Theres a few reasons why capital ships aren't "attacking" each other.

One: You may have set one or both to protect or beam-protect.
Two: A ship has an ignore tag on one or both of those ships.

Fighter/bomber ignore orders seem to carry through to capital ship gunners.

one: no, its all set up for war.
two: don't think so, i havent been able to get cap ships to ignore targets its not in their AI (helpful if it was, mind)

Oh thanks for the head ani advice, i havent recorded any wave files for my few misssions, so i was just using a short "beep" that came with the regeleus campaing i think.

Zylonbane's beam FAQ might have the answer you`re looking for. There's a link somewhere in my faq.

By the way, if they arrive after the mission starts, did you beam-free them only after they jump in or at the beginning? The ships need to be in the mission for beam-free-all to work. ;)

The only other explanations I can think of are that the ships are too far away from each other and therefore not in range, or that they are set up in such a way that none of the ships are in the fields of view of any of the beam cannons, but this is pretty unlikely.

I had been questioning that myself, and it seems the most likely explanation.  I usually set a general cue for a wave or convoy then stagger the ships by a few seconds in their warp in conditions.  However the beam free all commands for the ships are set in the warp in cue, so the BFA command happens before the ships warp in and that must be the problem.

thanks,
pete

You said that when you order them to attack, then they do. It sounds like the enemy capital ship has been ignored.

Also, a good way to use beam-free-all is just to use has-arrived-delay with value of 0, but that doesn't work for all (for me, it does), so you should probably try some higher number.
