800MHz Clawhammer stomps 1.6GHz P4

Now if only they'll start playing the MHz game that Intel's playing, they'll start getting more sales.
Gargoyles, Season 1.  Buy it, or DIE! :)

Already read that... :p

Hammer seems to be pretty good in 32-bit applications too. :) And that's not final version, and has only 256kb L2 cache, final should have 512kb... and more megahertz.

But that seems to be one powerful processor, if AMD can get it to 2+ Ghz, it will be very fast.

Can you imagine a dual hammer system? :jaw:

Bah... doesn't help in things I do.

I think you can only have 1 processor Clawhammer system, but Sledgehammer systems can have 8 processors (not sure :)).

Take note, the Pentium has to double the chip speed and more than double the memory speed to get to within one FPS.  Let's face it Intel's time at the top end of performance systems is rapidly coming to an end.
So as through a glass, and darkly
The age long strife I see
Where I fought in many guises,
Many names, but always me.

There are only 10 types of people in the world , those that understand binary and those that don't.

Intels design is increasingl;y motivated to offer high megahertz rating over actual performance.  It's not exactly a shock to find the Pentiums are slow, especially with that pipeline.

That's a knobbled hammer.

For a start it only runs at 800Mhz, has no SSE2, a semi functional 64-bit instruction set and probably no fancy features like superbypass (actually..scratch that, the hammer bus doesnt need it!) and hardware prefetching.

ANYTHING stomps a 1.6g P4 *ROFLMAO*

The hammer will probably have about 50-60% performance advantage over an identically clocked athlon XP.  in 32 BIT instructions.

Plus the hammer has a great memory system...the memory controller is on the processor die itself meaning if you add another processor you add another northbridge and double your memory bandwidth (you'll probably need seperate DIMM banks per CPU though...thats the problem with NUMA)

I'm looking to get a 4-way for rendering showreels out next year...course I wont own it..i'm hoping everyone will chip in, but anyway...64-bit Mentalray on a quad hammer...yummy :)

Should I be worried that I didn't understand any of that?

For a pre-production processor and motherboard, it did pretty damn good.  Intel needs to get cooking to even have a chance against the hammer.
