Freespace 2: Colossus Demo?
So a while back I had to get an old joystick from my brother because mine finally gave up the ghost. Its an old Logitech Wingman 3D. He still had it in the original box. I've been using it for about two months now to play FSO and I just noticed today that on the box it has an ad for Freespace. It has what I think is the original cover art from Freespace ( A Deimos getting hulled by beam fire), but it says Freespace 2 Colossus, 10 full missions, Game inside. The box is copyrighted in 2002, and the system requirements include windows ME, 2000, and XP so I am assuming this came out after FS2. So I was wondering if the bundled game was just 10 missions taken from FS2 or did they maybe throw together some missions with the Colossus that didn't make the actual release? And of course the disk is not in the box, but I will force him to hunt for it. Didn't know if any one had any information about this or not. Sorry if this has been discussed before, I looked for it but searching for "Colossus" on this Forum is kinda like looking for water in the Pacific...

Don't concern yourself with this game.  I in fact started out with FS2: Colossus.  Its nothing more than the first act of the FS2 main game... ending with `Feint! Parry! Riposte`.  There`s nothing in the game that you can`t find in the FS2 main game.

This.

I also started out with Colossus. I found out that you can do co-op campaign missions and, before I downloaded the ISOs (which were required at the time, seeing as it was before GOG and the only other option was spending $60+ on eBay) and installed properly. No audio/video extras that way but at least you can play missions.

Anyways, if you're thinking about playing, give it a try. If you like it, you can legally buy it on GOG.com.

About the only difference is that when you used cheats to force your primaries to capital ship beams, you shot these tiny BB's of death instead of actual beams. The demo isn't worth your time if you've played the full FS2 already, especially since it didn't come with multiplayer.

That was true in retail FS2, the closest you could get to a beam was the Shivan Super Laser.

I read about FS1 in a magazine and bought it shortly thereafter at GOG. :p The two events are not necessarily connected.

Seriously ? Your mom is weird. I had finished HL1 in Hard at that age.

That's what I figured...I was just curious if there were some long lost  :v: original missions floating around out there I didn't know of. I'm pretty sure this stick was bought just to play FS2, my brother and I killed more than one joystick on Freespace. I guess we were not what you would call finesse pilots, more of the "crush it into submission" type. The poor sticks never had a chance! I'm actually amazed that this one is still barely holding together.

Re: Freespace 2: Colossus Demo?
I went through 3 Logitech sticks in one year with FS2... and it all came down to not having any active cooling for the Force Feedback.  It kept overheating and ultimately either cutting in and out by the second, cutting out after a few minutes, or actually snapping the tension cords within.  When the later happened, I'd have to play without FF until they sent me a new stick (until my 1 yr warranty ran out).  When my last Logitech crapped out I went through a string of cheap sticks (since I couldn't find anything both economic and good) until finally finding a good price for an X52.  Even then I found that stick somewhat floaty, owing to the loose centerspring, rectified for the Pro version.  Now I use a simple Cyborg EVO that I bought for $5 at a Value Village and it suits my current needs quite well.

My brother and I beat the crap out of a SidewinderPrecision Pro for several years and the dirty little thing loved it and never let us down.

Re: Freespace 2: Colossus Demo?
Just found this post. Did this, by chance, contain music, CB animations and voice files as I'm reading on various sources?

Re: Freespace 2: Colossus Demo?
It contained most of the material required for missions 1-10 of FS2, including music, CB anims and voice files; but apart from the promo screens (shown on quitting), AFAIK there was nothing in FS2:Colossus that wasn't in the full FS2 either.

It is also missing the mainhall music... I remember after years of playing FS2:Colossus, I finally got FS2-full, ran it for the first time and sat there flabbergasted when the mainhall music kicked in :)

Re: Freespace 2: Colossus Demo?
Yeah. They included the mission files and ships for Part 2 & 3 but there was only voice acting and in-game music for Part 1. You could access the rest of the campaign by using MP mode.

FS2 Colossus isn't the demo for FS2.

The demo involved two missions, one in the nebula and some sort of convoy escort with the Psamtik or some other shivan capital. It's the reason I bought FS2 (and later FS1)

It kinda is a demo. I got a Colossus CD when I bought a Logitech joystick many years ago--and they did advertise the full game.
