Into the Depths of Hell Chapter 4 Issue
Hello,

So I've played a wonderful archaic campaign called Into The Depths of Hell for the second time and this time I ran into the same problem.

I've consulted the vast library of posts upon this glorious sight and found that people have had this problem in the past, like in 2004 when ITDoH was released... But nobody ever said anything concrete in the form of a solution.

(Spoilers below...)

Forgive me because I forgot the mission name (somebody said it was called "911" or something) but it's a Red Alert mission during a portion of the campaign where you escort a bunch of supplies to a NTF fleet. The mission is when you actually arrive at the NTF fleet.

On my laptop the game suddenly freezes at a random time anywhere from 20 to 40 seconds into the game. I can't interact with the game and windows tells me it's suddenly stopped responding. On my old laptop on the same mission, I was a tad luckier and the mission usually crashed about a minute to a minute and a half in.

There's a Deimos at 2% hull integrity and a modified Orion. There are a few wings of Shivan fighters and a wing of Taurvi's that appear to spawn randomly, in any given direction, about 2000 meters from where I spawn at the beginning of the mission. I've also noticed that only maybe 20% of the time the fleet I'm supposed to be guarding actually appears out of subspace. The rest of the time there's a group of cargo containers where they're supposed to exit.

Now, I honestly doubt this is a hardware problem. But if it'll help I have on my current laptop:

AMD A10 Quad-Core processor with Raedon HD graphics
6 gigs of RAM
an additional 1 Gig AMD Raedon graphics card

My previous laptop had considerably less hardware than above, it was only a single core, no additional graphics card, and only 2 gigs of RAM to it's name.

It might have something to do with what build I'm using, at which case I'm using 3.6.12 if that'll help.

So, assuming it's not one of the above, could it be a coding issue? Is it possible the Deimos is supposed to die (the Taurvi's do sometimes appear nearby it and make it explode, but this is only like 5-10% of the time)? What is wrong with this thing? The archaic posts do say that if you restart the thing over and over again it'll eventually work itself out, but does that really work?

Any help at all would be eternally appreciated, thank you.

The first thing you'll want to try is definitely upgrading to 3.6.14 final, if not right to the 3.6.16 release candidate.  Putting it mildly, 3.6.12 is older than things that are older than dirt.  If you're still having problems after using a newer build, run the debug version and attach the fs2_open.log file it generates; that'll give the resident tech gurus something to work from.

Thank you very very much for replying.  :D I'll give it a try with one of the newer builds (knew I should've upgraded when it came out...  :banghead: )

I know... Just by looking at the synopsis of the future chapters, it looked like a saga of epicness. Alas the fate of many works is to lay unfinished...  :(

Re: Into the Depths of Hell Chapter 4 Issue
Okay, I've gotten an updated launcher and FSO build (thank you for giving me reason to update.  :D ). In the regular build, I still have the same problems so I ran the DEBUG build and before it even got to the opening cutscene I was slammed with a window with this:

Code: [Select]
Weapon explosion 'GSbspcRiftExp' does not have an LOD0 anim!
ntdll.dll! ZwWaitForSingleObject + 21 bytes
KERNEL32.dll! WaitForSingleObjectEx + 67 bytes
KERNEL32.dll! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! SCP_DumpStack + 354 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! Warning + 430 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! weapon_explosions::Load + 296 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! parse_weapon + 8728 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! parse_weaponstbl + 172 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! parse_modular_table + 267 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! weapon_init + 101 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! game_init + 1640 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! game_main + 519 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! WinMain + 330 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! __tmainCRTStartup + 358 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! WinMainCRTStartup + 15 bytes
KERNEL32.dll! BaseThreadInitThunk + 18 bytes
ntdll.dll! RtlInitializeExceptionChain + 99 bytes
ntdll.dll! RtlInitializeExceptionChain + 54 bytes

which may or may not be my problem. I forgot to mention earlier that the campaign is a tad... buggy. (okay, okay, VERY buggy) Thusfar there's been nothing that's been completely disabling to my gameplay of the campaign, but I've been getting "Warning: 1 weapon wasn't found when we loaded this thing" sort of popups since the campaign began from time to time (and even on the mission I'm stuck on, as a matter of fact). But it's never crashed before now...

When I selected "Yes to break into debugger" it dies on me (or rather FSO the program "goes away"); when I select "No to continue" the same window comes up after like 5 seconds.

EDIT:

Okay, so pressing "no" successive times on the aforementioned dialog box (yay! I remember what they're called!  :p ) will land me the same dialog box with the same code 4 times. Then another similar dialog box appears with this:

Code: [Select]
ITDoH4-shp.tbm(line 695):
Warning: Error parsing XSTR() tag XSTR("Nike-class corvettes, These Corvettes are the Newest ships that are being commission for Terran Fleet Operations. Constructed at the Quantum Mechanics ship yards at a rate of four per year.

ntdll.dll! ZwWaitForSingleObject + 21 bytes
KERNEL32.dll! WaitForSingleObjectEx + 67 bytes
KERNEL32.dll! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! SCP_DumpStack + 354 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! Warning + 430 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! error_display + 289 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! lcl_ext_get_text + 277 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! lcl_ext_localize_sub + 459 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! lcl_ext_localize + 51 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! stuff_string + 1037 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! stuff_and_malloc_string + 105 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! stuff_malloc_string + 84 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! parse_ship_values + 920 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! parse_ship + 1013 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! parse_shiptbl + 374 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! parse_modular_table + 267 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! ship_init + 578 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! game_init + 1645 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! game_main + 519 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! WinMain + 330 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! __tmainCRTStartup + 358 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_14_DEBUG.exe! WinMainCRTStartup + 15 bytes
KERNEL32.dll! BaseThreadInitThunk + 18 bytes
ntdll.dll! RtlInitializeExceptionChain + 99 bytes
ntdll.dll! RtlInitializeExceptionChain + 54 bytes

which is odd because the Nike class corvette doesn't seem to have issues in the game. Either selecting Yes or No on this dialog box will crash the game (It "Does not respond" and so forth). Another thing I should've mentioned before  :banghead: is I've had to modify the Mod.ini (of each chapter) to include the other ITDoH chapter's mod folders (sometimes in order to get it to work at all).

This was one of my old favorites, I hope the FSCRP gets around to it one day.
