Absolute Mouse Position
Hi all,

I'm running FS2 and Diaspora under Ubuntu 12.10.  I tried using a joystick for control, but I just couldn't get the fine control I wanted.  I keep overshooting the targets.

My main problem with the mouse is that the position isn't absolute.  Or relative.  I dunno.  Anyway, in a tight turn, I have to pick up and re-position the mouse so I can keep cranking the turn.  Is there a setting to make the mouse behave so that the ship will continue pulling as long as the mouse is off-centered?

Is there a way to bind the mouse scrolling up/down?  If I click on a command and scroll the wheel, nothing happens.

I tried to bind the mouse left/right to roll vice yaw.  It looked like it was binding fine under the options, but the ship would not respond to roll.  I don't know why.

Thanks all.

Oh, if any joystick players have awesome tips that make the stick usable, let me know.  For me, it was virtually impossible to keep a cylon drone centered.

Nope. There was a script around for that, but i dont know if it was all that great.

In short, no. you cant bind the side buttons on a mouse either.

Diaspora is actually very nasty for joystick players due to fast ships and fast turning. Try playing a bit of normal FS2 and mods and try again?

Re: Absolute Mouse Position
There is a script available which will change the behavior of the mouse controls. You could try it and see if that fits your needs: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=74435.0

Re: Absolute Mouse Position
I pretty much found myself in the same situation as you do, and I can say that the script mentioned in this thread solved everything for me! I totally recommend it and it works perfectly. My only complaint was that the pointer was a little hard to see, so since it wasn't too hard to do I edited the script to make the pointer more visible. Let me know how it works out for you.

And I'm not sure what you meant about setting the roll with the mouse but on my case I set the left mouse button to roll left and the right mouse button to roll right, was that what you wanted to do? If so, just make sure to clear the binds of weapon fire from the mouse buttons so there isn't a conflict. Usually I just use the crtl and space keys to fire.

Neither do I. It might be the stick though, we're both using CH Products, and that's a top-tier stick. I don't know what kind of stick OP is using, but it might be vastly different.

Re: Absolute Mouse Position
I know with my Saitek Cyborg Evo, fine aiming when flying/fighting twitchy ships can be an exercise in frustration at best, and nigh-impossible at worst.  You basically wind up learning to "counter-compensate": as you twitch past the target in one direction, you have to quickly apply pressure in the opposite direction in an attempt to cancel your motion.  It winds up being quite a workout.  I'd use my beloved old Sidewinder 3D Pro instead, but I like the extra buttons and the throttle on the Evo better, so I'm kind of stuck with it.

Re: Absolute Mouse Position
All the Saiteks I've seen are horrible for twitch aiming, the spring loaded ones especially are just simply too tense to move fluidly.  On my x45 I have used zip ties to reduce the spring tension and also some keyhole graphite to decrease friction that often caused erratic movements.  Results are pleasing, although I still feel like the precision pro I have still wins in the feel good department.

i cant stand that single spring mechanism saitek uses. with independent springs, you can feel the tension on each axis. ch uses really good springs. i didnt like them at first but after i broke it in the spring tension was perfect.
