What's the best (or quickest) way to advance in rank?  Which campaign/mod works well for that? 


I've heard "Second Great War Part 2" lets you advance in rank relatively quickly but I've also heard that campaign is terrible technically and crashes. 


I read the FS wiki on this and I don't know if I'll ever make one of the Admiral ranks but I'd at least like to get to Commodore.

fred a mission with an objective to destroy a cargo container and give it 99999999999999999999999999999999 points.

I tried to make a mission where the objective was to destroy a cargo container (the mission went into the mission simulator in the tech room under 'single missions').

I played it and I should have advanced to the rank of Captain but I didn't.  So something's not working.

I think the point are only granted if you pack the misison up as a campaign.

It's mentioned in the FRED Documentation. Give it a read.

Or simply just check under the Editors tab in FRED. There should be an editor called 'Campaign'.

I tried doing what it said but it wouldn't work.


After I created the cargo mission like has been suggested, I saved it.  When I then went into the editors tab and looked under "available missions" like the FRED help guide said to do there weren't any missions to select.

Replay the Main FreeSpace Campaign.  You get a promotion if you destroy the PVD Anvil in Black Omega.

I don't remember any crashes; it is to be taken just as seriously as the title suggests though.

And yes- there are promotions in like every second mission or something there.

Ancient Shivan War Act I... play the first three missions and you have 2 ranks... and then restart the campaign, for the next two.

Even i have created a Rank Up mission for personal use... in which you have only to jump out for a promotion .

In which folder you have saved the mission, i.e. have you saved it in the mission folder of original Freespace 2 or have you saved it in the mission folder of mediavps or some other mod, etc.

I was told the only way to get points for rank advancement was through campaign missions.  In FRED there is a campaign tab in the Editor tab.  I first made a mission (and gave the one cargo container 2mil points) and saved it.  But when I went to the campaign tab next there was nothing under "available missions" so I couldn't make a campaign. 

FYI I had put the mission in the FS2 folder-data-missions

AFAIK with the new pilot code you should be able to use this pilot in every other mod and campaign afterwards...

If it do not work, i attached my RankUp! Mission.
Extract them in your missions folder.
Select "RankUp!" in the campaign room, start the campaign and jump out directly to advance to the next rank.
