The Meson Bomb though requires a little tweaking to not look dumb
The Bomb does an insane amount of damage and as part of the way the game works, the more "death damage" a ship does, the longer it takes to actually blow up. So the Meson Bomb can take a long time to go from dying to actual explosion. Even Volition saw this was a bit of a problem in their missions. If you look in "A Flaming Sword" (sm2-10.fs2), you'll see they're using the special explosion options to reduce the damage of a dying Meson Bomb from 50,000 to just 5,000. (You could also use the custom deathroll time in the special explosion options, which is a new SCP feature)
