It isnt practice as much as it is persistance...  But you have to have an idea and ROUGHLY sketch it out(and lightly I might add)... I could put up an art tutorial for all of you who want to really know how its done but you cannot expect to get it perfect the first time you try it... Its something you need to get a feel for. And expect your first picture to not meet your expectations.  Thats why you pick up another piece of paper and start again...

another wonderfull design perfectly ballanced... only problem with it is just my taste anyway...

Yeah, the Mercury sounds preatty good.

As for carp, it was a joke from somewhere.  Also handily replaces a crude word.  Kind of like Fork.

how bout calling it manta, or ray, (or manta ray...) something like that

(i just kept thinking 'something like a fish, marine, aquatic' when i was looking at it.) ignore the suggestion if you like.

A disturbingly short amount of time :D

About 20 minutes from the moment I had the concept... Meaning I had a more boxy version to start with but I smoothed it out. It kinda evolved as I kept drawing.
