Is there any way to make new ones or edit old ones?  If so how and using which programs?  If these are dedicated programs specially made for '*.neb's, where can I get them?

I think there was some small application included with the source code that could do this...

I got a feeling theres a max limit of six or something. Anyway, old ones can be edited 'cos I downloaded a bunch from somewhere.

The nebula backgrounds for full nebs are pcx files, and are thus easily moddable.

Oh, those nebulas; never mind then, I thought you meant the FS1 neb background files. Yes, all the fly-through nebula graphics are also 256x256x8 pcx files and are defined in nebula.tbl. You can only have six of the "poofs" but I haven't seen any such limit on the background files.

Easy, put your new nebula background in the data/effects folder, and add it to the nebula table. I think. For poofs, you will have to rename some.

the easy way is to email someone who knows....that would be aldo.  His Casualties of War mod has two new ones in it.

Those were used to define the placement of the FS1 nebula backgrounds and don't do anything in FS2; as I said before, I think I remember some extra program included in the source code that let one make these files. (can't check for certain since I do not have my main computer here) Actually, if you go into FRED2's background editor, you might see that "pattern" section; this was used to select the neb file to be used in the original FRED but is just an FS1 relic in FRED2, but it suggests that the appropriate rendering code still probably exists in the game.

I tried using that once in fs2. The game crashed.
