Well, to get results like this:
http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/qm/pub/snipes/Kurruk_in_Action_firefight.jpgI'll tell you how Kazan taught me...
Make a plane. About 90 long in x, and about .5 in y, clone it, and make it at 45 degrees on the x axis, do it again for -45 and again for 90, group it into a single object (like with trueview) then texture it with any beam texture. Use the filter on the texture so that all the black is filterred out (it's the blue sphere above the texture's pic). Tile it however many times you wish, and for a reflectance, I've found Matte, with full luminence, and 1/2 diffusion works nicely.

For the beam glow, use any flare image you have (FS2 suns work quite nicely) put it on a plane, make the plane perpendicular to the beam, at the end, and Viola! Beautiful see-through beams.

Next leson may be laser bolts.
