Cooperative mission development: good idea?
What do you guys think?

I've got this idea from the Shock2 community. My brother is working on this project, where a lot of people is working on the same mission for System Shock 2: each gets to play with the file for one day, then uploads it to a server, from where the next guy on the list gets the file to work on it.

One guy coordinates the project, and anyone willing to work on it is added to the list. After everyone has worked on the mission, the cycle begins again, until everything is done and it's fully polished.

Do you think that this would be feasible on Freespace 2 missions?

The question, though, is this: what will be the point of such an project? Some sort of entertaining endeavor, or to get a serious mission out of it?

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Maybe instead of everybody working on the same mission, have people work on seperate missions. Like person 1 works on mission 1, person 2 works on mission 2, etc. Kind of like writing a story between multiple people.

Dunno. I'm doing all the missions for my 2nd campaign (and I did all the missions for my 1st campaign too).

Like the PA thing. Or at least I assume that's the idea behind it- I do a few missions for some vague specs, so do other FREDders, builds a plot with a lot of different ideas.

I don't know how well that works, but something like it is definitely a good idea. My opinions on the matter are explained in the latter half of here (don't let the topic fool ya, I dragged it to something completely different that I wanted to talk about)

But since nobody reads links anyhow... Somebody say something I can debate and I'll be able to type it out right here.

I wouldn't trust anyone else with my plot, it's messed up enough, and... Oh crap, I lost all my mission files (this really happened today- 15 LB missions gone, counting for half a summer's beta testing and work. I yelled and broke things. I'm over it now)

My idea is not to have the whole community to take a look at the mission: just a small group of people. And all of them would work on a single mission at a time, perfecting it in a way that wouldn't be possible if a single designer was working on it.

Maybe a mini campaign could come out of this, after a few weeks - we could work on several missions at the same time, each of the designers started a mission based on a plot that's agreed among all of them, and the missions would cycle through them for a couple of weeks till all of them are done. So, anyone's interested?

I think the best way is to have one person design the mission, and other people test it, think of improvements, TRY the improvements, and then report whether they liked them or not. I still think that centralizing the development of a given mission is a good idea, but giving people the chance to play it a lot and give feedback makes it a better mission.

I'd say yes in a jiffy, but Real Lifeā„¢ has other plans.   One thing that would be neat is that even if the missions/campaign didn't work out in the end, well considered standards of mission design could be "set"; like standard naming for SEXP's, etc...

I'm shouting out for the testing position. I can't actually effect any changes as I can't FRED for peanuts (and don't intend on learning to - for now) - however, as sandwich can testify to, I'm a decent beta-tester-type guy.

Yup. That he is, alright. Does it about as well as he does renders, too.
