I hink those have been done, but to me a normal moniter is more promising, you saved money AND you get to destroy something big

I did that to an old 14" monitor.   Damn thing hit bottom (a good 10ft drop) and the tube didn't even explode!  Although I guarantee that the plastic was either shattered or cracked all over from the impact.  I was tempted to go down and break the glass on the tube, but I had to take care of other things and didn't have enough time to climb in and out of that smelly thing.
