note that this is not a request/suggestion, i'm simply reporting something "new" (i remember there was a discussion about 3d radars)

Hmm... that would be useful or nice addition to The Babylon Project as well.

I like the orb there, but without some clarification, I don't know which contacts are near and which are far. This is something the Iwar2 orb makes very clear. :)

i don't like ..kind of confusing..best 3d radar is saw was and old Novel Netware Game  'NetWars" u had a grided plane and "target" where represented by a vector from the projection on the plane spot to the object it self ..so like this u could see the direction , quadrant, distance .

That's sort of what the Iwar2 orb is: you have a spot in the center which is you. Drawn at max targetting range is the sphere. Targets are represented as dots on stalks. dots with inward stalks are in targetting range. dots with outward stalks do not. The length of the stalk shows you just how far away they are. Contacts and stalks are color coded.  Finally, if I remember properly, the orb matches your ships orientation, so whatever is on the far side of the orb is in front of you.

Unfortunately, the orb in I-War2 doesn't track debris, asteroids, etc. Just ships (and maybe stations) which makes it useless for avoiding noncombatants during a firefight. :/

anyone remember the "old" elite radar

I always liked that one, gave you a good feeling of where the ships where, above, below, behind or in front.

I agree with DTP.  That radar was the best alround to use.  It was simlpe, didn't get too cluttered and you could easily tell where everyone else was at a glance.
