How to edit FS1 tbl files?

With FS2 it's easy - extract the ships/weapons tbl, change it and put it in the FS2/Data/tables folder.

But FS1 doesn't have that folder.
What to do once I changed the file (let's say, I encreased the damage of the Terran Huge Turret), so that the changes would work?

Create tables folder under 'data' and put new tbl file there.

You can dump it in the main direcory of either game as well.
