it occured to me that the original way of keeping fighters from offing capships sucks. it sucks that you can start inflicting damage and then suddenly you cant do anymore and that evil capship gets away.

my sugesstion, tweak the code. add something tat sets a ships damage threshold, and by damage threshold i mean the minimum amount of damage a weapon must inflict before the damage is applied to a ship. this way you can off a corvette if you are using maxims or a prometheus you can damage a 'vette but your hl-7s wont do $}{!+.

In other words, give capships an Armor Class.

The intent behind the current system was to eliminate the ridiculous possibility of one fighter single-handedly destroying, say, a Sathanas. I could think of a few better ways to accomplish this, but any change runs the risk of unbalancing existing missions (*cough*Tiamat*cough*).

the idea is that you can forbid certian weapons from inflicting damage on the basis of their strength. you could in theory set the minimum damage value so high that only a meson bomb could inflict damage. you can have a bomber with armor that is impervious to anything less than a maxim. that way you can have situations that require things like teamwork. say you have a mission to take out a "new shivan bomber with special armor and lots of turrets" you are flying stealth fighters (to avoid turrets) while beta fly hercs with heavy guns. in order to attack the bomber, alpha needs to keep its sheilds down while beta attacks from long range. you could also create situations where luring a fighter to a capship is the only way to take it out.

We could add something at the end of the ships tabll entry like:
$Armor Class:         Medium ; possible low, medium, high
          +invulnerable weapons: ( "Subach HL-7" "Akheton SDG" ) ; weapons that won't do any damage.

i was more thinking about this

$damage threshold: 10

then if any weapons inflict 10 hitpoints or more of damage, then it would be applied. if the weapons have less that 10 hitpoints, the shots are ignored.

Or it reduces the damage of all shots by 10, but you'd have to tweak the damage values as well.

I was going to make a armor system with these sort of qualities, it was also going to have some cool visuals and stuff, never got around to makeing it, it was going to work on the basis of amount of damage receved for a ship total per second and a damage threshhold, so you with you're maxum could do damage or five wings of fighters could slowly widdel it down with ther HL7s but you by you're self wouldn't beable to scratch it (with HL7s)

Or you can just modify the Huge tag so that only weapons with the Huge tag can destroy the hull on corvettes and up.  That way you can still take down the turrets and subsystems without destroying the ship with a weapon such as the HL-7

Perhaps with this improvement, weapons could get an "armor_piercing" flag, and to make the "huge" flag a bit different, you could make that type of weapon do double damage vs. fighters/bombers :D
